today i lost electrical power and only just made it home on little electrical juice. I put about six months ago a denso alterantor into the rangie v8. Today when i got home i checked the voltage coming into the battery and it was like 8volts while vehicle running! The alternator was only about six months old and is a denso! have i fried the alternator?

Check that the charge indicator on the dash is working, ie is on with the ignition switched on and off when engine is running. No light=no charge. If the light does not come on at all, either the globe may be faulty or its wire is fallen off its alt terminal .
Check the big brown wire (battery feed) at the back of the alternator, if it's fried it won't work. Seen it often enough, caused by not tightening the connector nut. Cut the melted end off the cable and crimp a new end/repair piece on. It could damage the insulation inside the alternator around the connection post too.
Is your tacho still reading? It relies on the alt to work.
Best of luck.
Been there done that!!!Check the big brown wire (battery feed) at the back of the alternator, if it's fried it won't work. Seen it often enough, caused by not tightening the connector nut.
I soldered the lug onto the power wire of a ND that I bought in Saudi in 1985 or so and fitted to my 81 2 door.
Was driving home to Riyadh one night with aircon on and all lights blazing when the volt meter dropped to 12volts.
Turned out I had a dry joint and the heat melted the solder on the field windings which came loose and tore the guts out of the alternator. No red light as it was open circuit!!
I crimp all wires now, as it was an expensive lesson.
