Installing external switch for aircon
Have just had a bit of a disaster with my aircon; had it recharged yesterday (has needed recharging since I bought the car but just got around to it), then overnight one of the hoses ruptured and dumped the gas. Booked in for a replacement hose and another try at recharging next week.
During the short interval whilst the a/c was working, I had a chance to be frustrated (again) at the fact that you cannot direct the airconditioning onto the windscreen in these cars. The aircon switch is integral in the vent controls, and airconditioning can only be selected via the face vents.
I am thinking of taking the wires from the slider switch and installing a separate push on /push off switch so that I can switch the aircon on regardless of vent configuration, thus (according to my theory) enabling me to use a/c in conjunction with demist and even with the heater, as is the case in just about any other car of the same era.
I'm wondering if anyone else has done this or knows of any reason why it would not work or is inadvisable. Main concern I think is if the airflow does not come through the evaporator in some vent configurations.

What model?
Even my 92 is really an upmarket "hang on". when you turn on the air the heater blower fan is disabled and the blowers on the evaporator turn on and AFAIK the flap joining the air to the heater is closed..
The aircon and vents are just an add on under the dash.
When the flap does not close eg under low vacuum, the air goes to the floor.
I do not know how you could EVER get the air up to the screen but maybe there is some combination of the vents that I do not know about.

Sounds very confused to me!
Firstly which model do you have?
Secondly the original A/C in a 2 door and early 4 door is merely an under dash unit on the passengers side with a modified duct across the front of the dash and separate from the air plumbing for the windscreen vents.
With these models irrespective of any additional switches, you are not going to get the A/C air onto the screen.
You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

Yeah, when I think about it you are both quite right, 92RR same as my old 88 that I had the dash out of many times, the aircon is not an integrated unit at all, just hides under the dash and pretends to be. Frustrating that a luxury vehicle worth around $80k when new had a heating and aircon system that compared dismally with something like a corolla or mazda 323 of the same era.

A little plumbing perhaps?
Having just had the dash out of my 93 and new AC hoses and new heater core fitted, I was wondering the exact same thing.
My thinking goes along the lines of plumbing...The AC only goes along the clipon bit under the dash, the back side of this being all moulded plastic I figure that a hole or two could be cut into the back and a spigot pop riveted into it that is the right size for the flexible hose that goes to the screen vents. You would probably have to lengthen the hoses or get a new longer length, but that could be done. And it would mean that you had the AC going onto the screen all the time, however my feeling is that it probably wouldn't detract a great deal from how much air comes out the main vents and anyway if there is air going to the screen it will come back at you anyway.
I find that the driver doesn't get a lot of direct air as it is so a bit on the screen might even help him/her out...
I think it can be done!
(one day I might even try it!)

AC a joke?
My god, a few days ago i was only just thinking the same thing, thorght my ac system was not working properly too. I have only had my 88 classic a few months now and have just come back from queensland (god bless them) and diddn't realise the ac system is separate to the cooling/heating system (dumb). Any how i have a barrage of questions about my car as i havent owned a rangie before. i am just making a list.
cheers
Will.
