    92 electrical probs

    hi all,driving to work this morning the rangie lost everything no lights no engine nothing managed to pull off the road put it into park ignition of then on again and it started i did a u bolt and headed for home . i tried to start it just then and it sounds like the starter motor isint engaging the solinoid seems ok could this cause the engine to black out while driving or is it a deeper electrical problemany advice would on where to start would be helpful. thanks tony

    I would check the battery terminals and where the earth attaches to the body , motor etc.
    Secondly look at the fusible link which is inside tape? or cloth on the small wire from teh + AFAIK. Mine has never given trouble. But if the starter is not operating properly the odds are an earth or + fault.

    update , charged battery in, igntion on nothing then turns over eraticly almost starts but doesnt will check spark now not having a multi meter doesnt help just read the thread (engine stutter)could be my problem ,a couple of days ago driving between 80-100ks it was stuttering a bit but under 80 was fine, dont no, will keep looking.tony

    update its in the ignition barrel just took the couling off pushed the rubber gromet on a bit turn key and it started hopefully its fixed thanks for everyones input and will let you know how it goes.tony

    hi all well she starts first go now just ran a cable tie around the rubber gromet on the ignition barrel ,same fix as the 84 ,alls good swmbo's happy and thanks again to everyone now is beer o'clock.tony

    yeah there good fun landrovers wouldnt own anything else they keep you on your toes keep you thinking it'll be hard to let go of the 84 but 3 is just to many but i get to do up the disco soon.tony

    Hi,

    It's not the barrel but the switch under the grommet that wears and creates all sorts of weird elec probs.

    Been there, done that with a 74 RRC, including using a cable tie. Even took the actual switch apart and re-punched the copper dimples and got a couple of extra years out of it.

    If you value reliability just get a whole new lock assembly from here in oz:

    eBay Australia Shop - Classic Land Rover Range Rover: County Defender, Land Rover Series 1 - 3

    for about $180. Was worth it for me, the switch is unobtainable on its own anywhere in the world.

    Get a locksmith to change the key barrel to your old one if you are precious about only having one key for ignition and doors.
