oil pressure guage
G'day guys
I've got an 84 rangie and was wondering how you remove the smiths oil pressure gauge. the set up of gauges from left to right is a clock, pressure gauge, voltimeter and oil temp gauge. want to pull it out and check the connections as it reads max setting even when the engine is not running but ignition on. Thought my manual would say how but sadly not, probably because it's so easy they didn't bother. anyway if anyone knows how drop us a line

Just take that little piece of dimpled cover off the center tray and there will be some screws under it , then remove the little tray and you will be able to get at the back of the gauges . Dont think you will find anything wrong with the gauge or its wiring .
Does the pressure gauge go back to below zero with the ignition OFF ?
You said the oil pressure idiot light goes ot once the engine is running ?
What is the OIL Temp gauge doing with engine running , and . ignition on and engine not running ?
If you get under the car and look up to the oil pump you should see what looks like 3 sender units attached to the oil pump .Pull the leads off one at a time and see what happens .Ignition on , with engine running and stopped (but ignition on)
Outwardly it sounds like the oil pressure sender is Earthed out . but someone could have just swapped some leads around .

Gday mate,
yeah the gauge does go to zero with the engine off and the oil temp gauge and idiot light work normally, have re-terminated the wires at the oil pump end don't think the could have been switched around because they wont physically reach anywhere except the positions they are in, but ill see what happens when i swap them over.
cheers

The gauge, from memory, has an earth wire (black) illumination (red) and two others. One is from the sender and the other is from the voltage stabilizer.
I know the last two are the wrong way round on my POS, so it reads max pressure with the ignition on. Reads zero with ignition off.
Your prob sounds slightly different if its reading max all the time.
EDIT: just re-read this and checked what mine does......... reads max with ignition on, engine running or not.
cheers, DL
