    Should the Rangie go?

My 90RRC has served me well for the last 11years. Its previous owner was a millionaire and had it kitted out with ARB diff locks front and rear, 2x 40L wing tanks to compliment a 100L main fuel tank, belt driven air compressor, ARB winch bull bar and numerous 12v sockets. The 3.9L engine is at 225K and recently had a fair bit of work ($3.5K) and runs like a dream... however, i just had it broken into the other day, smashed front left passenger window, CV, CD head unit knicked and unfortunately in moving house recently i didn't receive the RAC insurance renewal... so not insured. I almost had the day off work i was so upset.

The internals show a fair bit of wear (aircon vents missing) cloth seats worn, stock floor matts worn, centre console beyond repair and the external paint work is fairly ordinary these days including a great deal of clear coat coming off the bonnet and i've had to replace the driver front door with a brown one that contrasts a great deal with the trocadero red the rest of the car is in. panels are fairly good. NO RUST at all.

Tyres are 90%, shocks are great and exhaust sounds awesome. It's also on LPG and i'm getting 22L / 100kms on LPG.

At work, the vehicle is the butt of many jokes and when the car detailer comes to work, my vehicle is not allowed to be detailed... a running joke that i don't take much notice of... but jeez i'd love to show the vehicle in all its glory and as Teddy Whitten used to say... "Shove it up 'em".

The question is... as i do love the car... should i send it in for a repaint and look around to replace the internals, or should i just move on.

Would welcome some advice on this emotional matter and feedback around some of the costs involved, as i could substantiate spending $10K to $15K on getting it back to where it was at, with the potential of seeking some engine mods for better performance, all in an effort to keep it going for another 10years.

    Cheers... Tim

    Short answer....

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!

I've had my '93 since 1997 and I'll still have it in 20+ years.

If you look around you'll find plenty of good nick original spares around or if your not fussed about originality, Disco consoles will fit with some molding as will a number of other interior items.
I'm already collecting hard to find components now like BW transfer, EAS pumps & valves, various ECU's etc to keep her running for years to come.

And maybe a spare bullbar too. Seven foot boomer nearly killed my rangie at 80k's on Springvale Rd a few years back....

    Cheers

    Andrew

    X2 - No way!

Have a long hard think before you do anything silly. Have you ever got rid of something, only to regret it later? Can you imagine how bad that feeling would be for something like this.... Don't do it - you will regret it. You can keep em going forever if you want. Mine is an 86, but, with a bit of TLC, it runs better now, and is more relieable than it was 17 years ago when my Father in law first bought it. I get comments all the time on what a great vehicle it is - there are a few knockers that bag me at work, but don't listen to anyone like that - they all drive Patrols, Hilux's & Triton's - Baaaa!

Be different - Keep it & love it - you won't regret it.

That is the million dollar question?!?

I would personally wreck or sell and buy a D2a with all the fruit.

Still a V8 but much younger car.

    Temptation...

    Tim,
Just don't ever drive a recent model Asian SUV, especially don't tow with a diesel one...

    - I'm quickly getting over my Rover... and I'd love to crucify the entire British Leyland management for how they took RR and turned it into......

If you're silly enough to keep on spending money on it... well.... No sympathy from me !

    Quit whilst you're ahead...
    - I'm keeping my '89 Pajero diesel 'cos its RELIABLE...

    Cynical James in Gosnells.

The 'EH' (Event Horizon) 95 Classic Vogue SE with *working* EAS, (new Arnotts all round) AND Cruise Control. !
    - New Dizzy cap, genuine Rotor, leads, plugs, hose set and re-build of EAS valve body on the "To-Do" list... Fan speed switch and rear window switches after that. Maybe...

mmmm. 2 for keeping it and ... 5 against (my wife's giving herself 3 votes). If i was to keep it, i would like it to look great both inside and out and the motor to be a wee-bit more powerful and run strong as well.

Can anyone give me some advice and/or better than ball-park figures therefore on the following which I PERCEIVE as being the major points:

    * New or recond 4.6 litre engine (i have reviewed threads on a supercharger and discounted this as a way to get more power) to mate to existing 5spd manual.
    * Engine management system - wolf or something similar (just threw this one in - i do believe they can be very good at giving you more power and economy)
    * Respray to black (current colour is Trocadero red) plus some very minor panel beating - not looking for a million dollar look and in fact looking for perhaps a matt black (not gloss) finish, like some of the new harley and triumph bikes are colour schemed.
    * Soft Dash ('94 Rangie) or Disco dash replacement plus labour and the quirks that go with it (cables/wiring/new guagues, etc)
    * Retrim or refit of front and rear seats (currently grey cloth trim) - is it possible to retro-fit P38 seats - especially front ones?
    * centre console - need a new one... existing one has seen far better days and is black taped together.

as stated previously, i would be prepared to spend $10 to $15K, knowing that i've got a vehicle that will last me a few more years. Not yet ready to spend anything like $30K plus on a later model landrover.

thanks againg in advance for any assistance.

make that 3 for keeping it!

lets be honest, the amount you're going to spend is out of all proportion to the value of the car (to a dealer or ebay vulture) but you would spend half of that getting the goodies you've already got on this one.

If you are willing to spend the money on a restoration project you've already decided to keep it, good call!

how much more power are you looking for, could just get a high compression rebuild on the 3.9.

    x4 for keeping it.
I too Like Love me Rangie have many many spares just so i can keep it going.
I have just replaced the worn but still running 3.5 with a 3.9 and am on gas as well.
The more I drive it the better its getting. With 385k on the clock It still is better to drive than any other 4wd except another landy. Its sounds great is cheap to run on gas and is simple to fix when needed.
For 10k and some do it yourself help You can redo it back to nice condition
where You can get it detailed!!!!

my wife has just said... "it's obviously a disease being a landrover range rover owner", "it's like an obsession... that once you're in you're in... you can't break free".

    how frequenly she is wrong...

Someone somewhere had a load of pics of his shoe-horning in of a Disco softdash into his Classic RR. With the newer seats and door trims it looks a million dollars...

After-market ECU ? In theory I suppose it could be better on fuel, but would that make a big differance to LPG? - is yours air/gas mixed or LPG injection ?

Matt black ? Its always a pain when changing a vehicle's colour... Never possible on a budget. Tried it twice in my mis-spent youth, even stripped the vehicle to basic frame, but still looked like a colour-change on the cheap even though it was'nt and a professional spray-painter did the job.
I'd be inclined to keep the same colour, just use better quality paint etc.
    - Paint the bonnet black on top if glare is a worry...

Your Wife is correct.... The condition is often terminal... My survival and sanity depends on occasionally driving the Pajero, Capella and (The Leader of the Opposition's) Magna.

There is still a chance of Light at the End of the Tunnel.... hopefully is won't be a fast approaching train....

    Yours in a shared affliction

    James in Gosnells.

Low compression 3.9, but only 155k at the moment.
