    Alternator no charge

Gday all went to start up the rangie 1984 on Saturday noticed the battery light never came on, checked to see if the alt was charging and found no charge, checked the glob for the battery light wasn't blown, tested the battery cable to the alt 12.8volts all ok, checked for 12volts to power the electro magnet and no power even tried revving engine still nothing, tried running a jumper wire from the battery to the power terminal and still wasn't charging?!! tested earth all ok, manual states that the electro magnet wire is fused but fails to mention which fuse or were it is, have come to the conclusion that the voltage reg or diodes have sorted and blown a fuse but were is it??? is it with all the other fuses in the panel next to the center consol LH side? has anyone else had this problem?

    Cheers.

Glob? Electro magnet? You've lost me. Either the charge indicator wire has fallen off the back of the alternator or the alternator is fried. Go get a suitable Bosch alternator from a sparkie or wreckers.

Think he means globe, not glob? Anyway, I concur with Bee Utey, ditch the Lucas junk and put a Bosch unit in. Saves all the dicking around with external regs and other junk.

I'v bought a brand new alt, pulled out the instrument cluster removed the charge indicator globe tested with 12volts all ok, checked wiring diagrams can't physically see what would be causing the charge light not to work?! installed new alt still no charge light????? all instrument cluster globes and gauges ect go through a multi function unit located in the instrument cluster has anyone ever had this fail? or been at fault cheers. and would anyone know how to test it?

Take off the charge indicator wire (brown/yellow stripe?) from the alternator. Switch on the ignition. Test the circuit by earthing this wire to the engine. If the charge light does not come on fit a temporary charge light between the connector on the alternator and the + side of the ignition coil. Then try see if it charges.

PS you still haven't explained what the "electro magnet" is. Never heard of one on a RR.

I think he may be translating some other language for relay.

This can happen if the alternator has gone open circuit, ie worn out brushes , or what happened to me once overheated terminal, solder melted, field wires contact armature.

sorted it out, poor connection in instrument cluster also corrosion on feed wire causing excess resistance all good now.

and yes RR are full of electro magnets, an electro magnet is a bit of metal which is magnetized by running a current through it ie relays, starter solenoids, injectors, electric motors ect
