    inlet manifold gasket

    hi all,
i've got an acl & a permaseal inlet manifold gasket & was wondering what people use to seal these up as they don't have a paper strip glued over the ports area as i've found in the past.

    thanks, adam.

    Huh?
If you are referring to the valley gasket in an RV8, there are two types. The older is a tin gasket with raised sprung seals, the newer a tin gasket with a rubber coating on both sides.

For the tin gasket most spray Hylomar around the water passages and maybe around the ports and the rubber coated gasket doesn't need any further seal.

I did mine a year ago - was the older style of gasket - I used a standard automotive sealant all around the the contact areas paying particular attention to the water channels.

It worked well - have now covered about 12,000km with no issues.

What about the new composite ones? What sealant should be used around the water ports if any?

The only RR valley cover i've used is the new composite type with permatex grey silastic around the water channels which worked quite well. it was the rubber end seals that disintegrated & started leaking oil. The P76 gasket as you can see from the left or bottom pic is what I was comparing to the ACL/Permaseal type in the middle. The new composite type on the right or top is the best IMHO as i've had the paper gasket on the P76 soften causing a vacuum leak.
    thanks for your replies.

just another thing to watch for is oil leaking up the two end seal bolts. I had to wrap some thread tape around them to seal them up.
i've added a link which I found useful.

Composite will potentially give a slightly better seal (a bit more forgiving), but have been known to disintegrate into the valley and therefore the oil galleys over time.

Tin gasket with a spray of Hylomar has been what I used in the past.

I recently changed my heads and I found the composite to be much easier to fit than the tin, especially since the composite does not have a "front".

It also seems to sit much better on the head faces. So unless mine gets the delaminations , I will go composite every time.

BTW give the end seals a liberal coating of permatex, and perhaps use the hint given to me by another forum member to shorten the seal by cutting a bit off each end if it appears too long.

I recently changed inlet manifolds, I used the composite type gasket with a little loctite gasket maker around the water channels. It has sealed real well but time will tell really.
As always remeber to prep both mating surfaces well to get the best seal!

    inlet manifold

I have always used the tin valley covers using ultra blue on the water ports nd on the ends of the front and rear seals with great success.
