    newbie AND BIG Rangies! Engines!

    Hi all!

    I'm now a Rangie 1986 owner, I'm running 4.6, 2inch body lift, maxi rear.
I will be going big. 35s.

My brother has one, my best mate has one. all big.

If anyone can steer me into the ins and outs of puting a 4.6 into a 3.5 efi. 1986. BUT kind of noticed that a second 4.6 is a bit pricey. So holden might be the way to go.

I was thinking of different engine transplants. Am thinking a LS1 or holden 308 VN. The computer ECU is the issue. Has anybody broken the DELCO computer. OR knowing which wire is which??
We are all handy with the tools.

Let me know. Thats whats next for my brothers one.
    Cheers NAT

Not actually sure what u are saying?
You are running a 4.6 already and want another?

You want a 4.6 and need help and what is all the big stuff??

1stly, I had a few 4.6 motors and if you go that way, do it right with the high compression motor, get everything balanced properly and take your time.
I ran Haltech F9 and had that 4 speed auto box. They are heaps stronger than the LT77 which come with the manual of that era.

Cost of a good build up with new Haltech or similar will cost you $10k easily depending on what you do and what parts you replace along the way.

Now, why and what is all this Big Big Big stuff?

O.k you want big wheels---check your local or state authorities on what lifts or tyres you can run. Remember that you will be putting huge amounts of strain on steering, bearings, diffs and the car will not handle anywhere near as good as the engineers spend years working out as optimal in the factory.

Big wheels can be a bonus, that is true but certainly not always, mainly when in car park and a mini is parked in your way.

They look kind of cool when showing your mates too but for on road handling, braking and wet weather handling, they are pigs.

If you are building a show or competition that is another matter also but just make sure as the motor gets a build up, you must build up the rest of the running gear proportionally as well.

Good luck either way, the 86 model year is a good basic starting point.
Also check the transfer case if its the BW viscous or the LT230. The latter is the one you want.

    Cheers

You forgot the BIG BIG BIG budget? Anyone baulking at the cost of a used 4.6 doesn't know about the much greater cost of buying adaptors, making wiring looms work and getting engineering approval. And having a driveline that can handle big-big-big attitude will cost more than $5 too. Everything you want will cost you 10 to 100 times what the truck cost to buy, ie the budget of a small engineering shop. I assume your 3.5EFI is running the SMALL 2HP22 4 speed auto as well.

    Mornin all,

I understand the prices, the way I look at it is when my RRC has served me well ( I can afford), and its time to move into a Disco (1) I was planning and bringing all my mods with it into the Disco (1).

I was surprised at the cost and thought it could not be that much, 6-10k.
I now understand that I am VERY green to rangies hence I was asking.
    I was thinking:
    4.6 =$3k
    amendities and stuff=$1k
    just in case $1k
    equals $5 k.
I thought my back ground would help, I am new to the differences between the mulitple of engines. 3.5/3.9.4.6.
I was not sure ( and still am not sure) main differences. I was hoping some plumbing and some ECU upgrades.

    Thats what I was asking.

    Holden V8
    Ls1 =$1500
    Marks adpators: $1000
    ECU $2000
    Misc: $1000.
not sure from here! = I was not aware of transmission isssues.

I was planning to all work ourselves, would prefer to learn for future projects.

    Cheers NAT
P.S thank you for all replies! This is why I joined! to learn!!

Decide what you want, Delphi ECU and Delco are very easily overcome,

I've done plenty into various cars/4wds/hotrods

If you are doing all your own work, adapting a Holden trans to the LT230 transfer case might be better. There are some posts/threads on that subject on the site:

the way I look at it is when my RRC has served me well ( I can afford), and its time to move into a Disco (1) I was planning and bringing all my mods with it into the Disco (1).
I used to have an 89 RRC 3.5 with a 5 speed, loved it except for the underpowered 3.5,
so i went out and bought a 94 Discovery updated dash, 3.9 auto, swapped all the goodies over, suspension, winchbar, uhf ect,
i regreted it ever since, missed my RRC,
My preference overall is the RRC, wished i'd kept the one i had and simply saved the funds to put in the 4.6!
A couple of months back i found another RRC with a 4.6 in it, so i snapped it up and sold the Discovery, really happy with it but again, i now have to fit better suspension and put my other goodies on it.
Would have been much cheaper to update the engine in my first RRC!!
    Good luck,

I love my rangie, 78 model with a 5L and GQ running gear....doffs, transfer case and 5 speed manual box. Trick to doing it cheap is to buy one already engineered!
