One for 3.5 EFI technos.....set up
Hi Forumites,
Ok, bought an 86 Classic a while ago, been working on sorting it out, engine wise. When I bought it the engine was a non runner, on LPG or petrol, I ditched all the LPG gear it was out of date and it was looking a little worse for the wear.
I found at some point the engine had backfired and basically destroyed the MAF sensor, I managed to get a second hand MAF sensor and fitted it, engine now runs like a dream. To a point.........
I want to set up the MAF sensor and the idle adjustment, I've adjusted the throttle position sensor as per the manual, don't get me wrong the engine runs fine, the problem I suppose is more with the idle setting, I can screw the idle adjuster screw all the way in and the engine will still run quite merrily, actually it still idles a bit higher than normal.
The "Do Not Touch" plugs have both been removed, I suspect that the guy who had the Rangie before me removed them and had a bit of a fiddle before he gave up trying to start the engine.
So the adjustment screw in the MAF sensor that apparently adjusts the mixture, out is richer in is weaker, is that right? Or is out weaker?
Roughly how many turns out from fully in will be roughly right, the screw was about ten turns out from fully in, which I suspect might have been to much, I don't know.
The idle adjustment screw, similar question, how many turns out from fully down would be roughly right, the screw was about six turns out when I got my mitts on it.
At the moment the Mixture screw is roughly four turns out and the idle adjustment screw is about 3 ish turns out. The engine idles OK now and seems to run OK.
When I move the auto T bar from P to D or R the revs drop and the engine just manages to hang in there I would be happier if the idle was just a little higher when in D or R.
I used a Gunsons Colour tune spark plug gizmo to check the mixture by looking for the blue flame, the blue flame at these settings seemed to be steady and consistently blue.
Does anybody out there have any basic settings so I know if I'm in the right place or not. I haven't got a CO meter unfortunately, so that isn't an option.
Thanks in anticipation for all constructive comments.

Yeah , had he same thing on my 88RRC highline , turned out to be the EAV , or extra air valve thats was all gummed uo. Block it off with a warm engine and see what that does , same as the IAC on the 3.9 . Remove it ,place in boiling water and observe what happens .then put volyage across it and see what that does , there two gates in the EAV,one works off engine temp and the other is electrical pre heat. Both the adjustment screws are air-bleeds , screw them in and you decrease the amount of bypass air , hence enriching it / Engine spark timing , along with the vac advance have a big effect on idle quality .Does turning the air-con on (it does work doesnt it?)have the same effect as loading up the convertor (putting it in drive) ?
Hope you have done the Beeutey Bosch amp mod ,absolute must !
Im wrecking the old highline later this year , even got a Spare good ECU , if you need any bits .Only live around the corner from you ! (Jarrahdale)
Not bad for $866.36 from Fleabay !!!!

Hi There,
"Round the corner" and I saw Newman down as the location........... Jarradale, correct just round the corner. Air con, uuuuuuuuummmmmm, don't think so. Anyway all I'm trying to do now is get it over the pits, I can work on other "stuff" after I get the old girl registered. The guy before me gave up and let the registration slip, I didn't pay much for it, the previous guy bought an new ECU, fuel pump, spark plugs etc etc and then gave up. The cars as straight as, just needed some TLC, as soon as I know it's ok I'll invest some more money and time.
Thanks for the offer I keep it in minds, why are you wrecking yours? Looks to good to wreck.
Thanks for the tips around the adjustment at least I know which way I have to go now and what I'm doing. I assumed that the screw on the MAF was air bypass I just wasn't sure which way to go. Thanks again.

Yeah , I sort of commute between the 2
Ive also got a old disco1 200TDI parked in the shed ,(the missus has driven since brand new !) so ill take the Maxi-drives, the 33x12.5s and special offset 15.8s rims out of the RCC, and slip in one of my big Holden strokers , and dump the rest.
So if you would like to convert it to a diesel , the Ill have everything you need to do the conversion , including a good R380/Lt230 !!
