mysterious banging noises from behind the dash

    Hi all,
On my 75 2 door whenever the fan behind the dash is on horrible banging noises are emited from behind the dash. I have pulled of the plate where all the pictures for the heater etc are on but that didn't get me any closer. If the fan controller lever thingo isn't on off the noises are made, and soon as the fan starts the noises do.It is a probom the car has had for the 9 months i have owned it.

How hard is it to get to the fan to replace it?
And if its not the fan are there anyother possibilities for the causes of the noises?
    Thanks.

Sounds like you have a leaf or twig caught in the fan can be very annoying untill they break up and fall out The other possibility is a very small person behind the dash any screaming noises when you turn the fan on

    can't see noises

    Hi Happykid55

I'm afraid I was also standing behind Superman, when they gave out the last of the x-ray vision eyes!

Could the noise that is occurring when the fan runs, be something that has dropped down a demister vent and is now touching the fan blades.

    Cheers Arthur

I had a similar problem with a falcon too hard to remove the fan so I turned the fan on high with the heater to dry it out and break up thats if its a leaf etc if you think it is more than that you may have to dismantle half your dash but I would try fan on high for a while may take a couple of goes

I might try that, the only thing is that the banging is really loud which makes me think that there is something hard in there, but i guess a broken fan is as uselful as a fan that I can't use anyway.

    Hi Happykid,
Might be something like a biro which unfortunately won't harden up and break, one of the small fan blades might have broken loose, this also won't fix itself without being taken apart. Is the noise in time with the rotation of the fan if you know what I mean, it isn't a random banging noise it is a consistent timed banging, does it sound metallic? If what ever is in there isn't a natural "something" like wood, after nine months this must be driving you nuts. Does the intensity change when you move the flaps?

OK so the sound comes in and out of volume relating to vent position aswell as driving speed, (more air more noise) when it is occuring its a banging noise that is consistant, but not fast so maybe 20bpm, leading me to think its only one fan blade hitting something. but there is always a whining noise as though the bearings are gone or the motor is struggling. it does sound metallic at times, it can get really loud drowing out all noise in the car, but like it said it comes in and out with accordance with air speed, but not always (sometimes more common than others) when the fan switcher is in the off position there is no noise, even with the vents open. having the fan on fresh or circulated doesn't affect the noise (exists on both).
I just leave it on off but with summer approaching and no A/C i feel like the fan would be a nice luxury.
Also im not sure whether the fan is just weak in range rovers but there doesnt seem to be much air coming out when it is on. Maybe like a 2 on a modern car.
    Thanks for the help.
