88 RR Idle / Surge Problem Help Needed

    Hi All,

My 88 Rangie is a 3.5L injected and has a idle / surge problem when the tank is full or if I corner fast. When either of these occur the engine has a miss under load and the idle speed drops and surges between 100 and 500 RPM. Even if I hold the throttle at 1500RPM the engine still surges.

When the fuel level in the tank drops to about 3/4's the problem disappears unless driving on a winding road and then it returns. After cornering if I stop and turn the engine off for about an hour the problem disappears again.

Any ideas on what is causing this?

All hoses seem to be clear (no blockage)

I am thinking it might have something to do with fuel surging back up the return hose and causing a blockage.

Its probably something to do with your emissions canister letting fuel into the inlet manifold at inappropriate times.

Maybe disconnect and plug the line that goes from the canister to the inlet manifold and check.

I do not know the setup on an 88 but the 14CUX has a valve which is controlled by the ECU. If the valve is stuck open this could cause your problem.

Strongly suggest that you fit a fuel pressure gauge in the Cold start injector Line , so can you see if there is any pressure variations that shouldnt be there. Ive got a VT Holden V8 pump in the tank and it has improved the performance of the old 3.5 out of sight .Ive got it running 36PSI at idle and 45 PSI at WOT(standard is 28 to 36 PSI !!) , better than the mates 3.9 anyday !! Then look at the Vacuum overrun valve and its relay .Yep the 88 Flapper has not much in common with the 14CUX system .
Get the article Bradtot suggests ,its excellent for troubleshooting the old Flapper System

    fuel delivery

not much help but really sounds like its related to fuel delivery . Pump pressure and volume . Anyone think this could be fuel filter or would that be consistent fuel starvation . Could it be something foreign in the bottom of the tank surging aroung the pickup ? Im no expert .
    Good luck with it .

Now before you rushing off and buying this , Ive got a modified long range tank that takes the flat flange type . Yours is probably a tapered seat type so it probably wont fit yours unless you do some modifications . Not sure if your 89 has a access flap above the pump in the rear floor ,(my 88 didnt , but it has now !!) otherwise youll be dropping the whole tank out . Try to pick up a cheap one from the wreckers to see if a conversion is possible.
