Thread: Tyre size help please

Both 235/85 and 265/70 are roughly the same diameter and look good in a RRC wheel arches -it's up to the driver's personal preference I suppose. 235/85 is a bit better for rough off road, 265/70 gives the rangie a bit better ride perhaps - but a little less articulation and a larger turning circle.

Thanks very much mate, ive just put the rangie back on the road after 2 years in the cow paddock and its only for Jan (wife) to plod around town but its a 15klm trip on hilly, gravel roads so wanted to pick up some suitable tyres.

If that's what you're using it for, I suggest that you stick with the standard tyre size. This size was chosen by the designers to work as a 'balanced' overall package. Once you move away from standard you alter that balance and in your case, by going to a significantly larger diameter tyre you will increase the final drive gearing and it will feel like you are always in a higher gear than you are accustomed to. This is probably not desirable on the "15klm trip on hilly, gravel roads" that your wife will encounter on her drive to town.

Don't get me wrong, large diameter tyres have their advantages/uses (increased ground clearance, longer 'footprint', etc) but many owners who fit the larger tyres, for the above reasons, then find they need to change diff ratios to get their lower gearing back. What I'm saying is that modifications are OK if you need/want to get increased capability from your vehicle but be aware that each modification or step away from standard often leads to further mods and the corresponding further expense.

The 235/85s will be fine for this but start flexing up the suspension & they'll catch a few bits of the body.

I thought standard tyre size on all Classic Rangies was 205R x 16 and that Neils current 235/70/16s were already a larger size than factory standard.

As for staying with the factory standard size. A Classic fitted with its factory specified 205R x 16s is a formidable beast in the bush as well as being very well mannered on the highway and around the shopping centres.

Performance in all conditions on standard factory 205R x 16 size tyres depends a lot on tread pattern and a decent All Terrain tyre with proper air pressure will do everything that most want to do. Toyo Open Country tyres and Bridgestone 604V tyres are very decent and problem free all terrains and work extremely well on the Classic Rangie.

The 235s are a wider tyre but have the same overall diameter as the original 205R16s.

Thanks and agreed Scouse but in my "poetic licence" mind any increase in tyre dimensions is a move up and away from standard factory spec.
