V8 Ignition Distributor Waterproofing Kit Success??

    Hi,

I have a RRC 1990 3.9 V8 and last time i went through a relatively large water crossing the engine cut out.

I want to know if anyone's had any success with the V8 Ignition Distributor Waterproofing Kit? I've seen them on ebay and would love to hear a good success story.

    Cheers,

    Christian

Have no experience with the kit. On one of my former Rangies, I made a shield for the distributor that consisted of a square of sheet metal (about 180x180mm from memory) that stood vertically in front of the distributor and was secured by 2 water-pump bolts. This shielded the dizzy from the fan spray in deep crossings, worked a treat.

I have sealed mine with waterproofing grease on the cap / distributor body join and an old Discovery mudflap mounted in front to prevent direct water spray off the fan. No more missfires in the wet.

haven;t seen the kit but if playing in the water lots can also plumb an air line into the dizzy with a few PSI's. Small 12v air horn compressor will do it.
Just make sure the intake for the compressor is up high as not to fill the dizzy with water!, Go near water, flick the compressor on and away you go.

To complicated? try 2 rubber gloves with small holes in the tips of the fingers!

All of the above or fit P38 coil packs and a megasquirt (?) to drive them.

I agree with the megasquirt, mine runs EDIS coil packs, and even with a garden hose pouring on them, the engine doesnt skip a beat!

Used to do that with one of my old cars, around 20 years+ ago... soak the engine in detergent, start it and then hose it off. - Nothing better than a high-pressure hose to clean out the spark-plug recesses, and the rising temp dried them out nicely.
    - I have a 'thing' about not letting dirt/garbage/etc get on the threads or INto the cylinders...

Air idea sounds do-able. I believe some vehicles use 'positive air pressure' into diffs/transmissions etc. whilst fording.

Don't know how much - if any - air would find its way into the inside of the engine, might be an issue there.

Interesting. - Does this setup give a markedly (measureable at the fuel bowser) better performance than standard ign. in good nick?

I've been looking at this setup for my D1 and to buy a full kit starts at about 700GBP, though if you source some of the bits yourself you can save a chunk off that.

that is the waterproofing kit you get off ebay for 35 dollars, not sure how effective it'd be.

I've seen the megasquirt and it looks fantastic but dunno if i can justify 750GBP due to the limited amount of water crossings i plan on doing.. How easy is the megasquirt to install??
