    Thumbs down axle tube broken

Has anyone had a axle tube let go at the hub..
up near coopers creek last weekend me and a mate were going for a few beers at coopers but didnt get there... the axle pipe /tube broke while i was mototring about 50 kms an hour along the cowwar - rawson track..
because the hub sheared completely of it took out the brake line so i was unable to brake.. after pulling the auto back into 1st gear and ripping the handbrake on full tilt she came to a stop.. steam bellowing out of the rear axle..now because the chrome molly axle was pulled out of its spline in the ARB air locker it completely ground out the the centre housing before i could pull the vehicle up...Damn got it all out now Andrew from Hiline has the Centre and Axle 24 spline checking it all out.. check this picture out..

    Yuck!

Didn't you have the second brake circuit working?

I lost an "A" frame ball joint when the mount tore off the top of the assembly but yours is more spectacular.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

Wow, that is bad. In a quarter-century of mucking about with Landies I've never heard of this happening. (No doubt is has somewhere, but not often enough that I'd know.) How old is the car? Has it had a hard life?

IRC that section is friction welded on. Looks like they didn't do a good job in your case.

Yes, they're friction welded, and that must have been just plain bad luck to get a dodgey one.

    Wow, never seen that before.

But I can guarantee that to fail after ~25 years it didn't just shear. It'll be fatigue which started with a small crack and grew over thousands of cycles. It must have been leaking oil for a while before it went.

What size rubber and how much weight do you carry?
