RRC V8 with the Aircon Compressor Low on the LH Side

I couldn't think of a simpler title than that!

I'm intrigued by Range Rovers from about 1985-ish that have the airconditioning compressor mounted down low on the LH side of the engine, driven by a belt that also goes around the crankshaft pulley and power steering. I've got an engine from one:

With really short hoses, this seems to make more sense than what I've got in my car, which is a York compressor on the RH side, and hoses that run all the way around the back of the engine bay, getting heated up, which is silly and no doubt meant for LHD Saudi vehicles. And then the later Rangies have a Sanden-type compressor in the same spot, still with the long hoses.

The compressor in the photo is a Saguro wankel type, but the Sanden 4616/SD7H15 seems to be a straight swap. So I should be able to use these brackets with a Sanden and new hoses, which wouldn't hurt since my current system is leaking anyway.

But the whole setup isn't in my parts book. Anyone got a number for the drive belt? And why didn't they stick with this configuraton? Too annoying for aircon techs filling it up?

some vehicles come from the factory with air con fitted by rovet etc
some cars have retrofitted air which is basically aftermarket and can come in any compressor/bracket/location
retro fitted air was fitted to new cars by private companys some of which probably looked at rhe factory configuration and threw up then built their own superior design
i think you are probably right about the york compressor as this was factory i believe and predominatley lh drive vehicles

My '82 is exactly the same as that one. I have a P76 V8 in my car, though it has the front cover off the '82 3.5

The bracket is a bit of a pain in that it covers the last bolt of the water pump so if you want to change the water pump you gotta take the a/c compressor off or bend the bracket (I've done it both ways... much easier to drop the compressor.. bending the bracket sucked bending it back!)

A low mounted a/c comp clutch might be at risk of excessive wear from too much mud, perhaps? Anyways, if you fit BOTH a/c compressors, one can be for the tyre air system. Yorks do well at air compressoring and you can easily block the oil way to the front seal area.

I see you're right with me, Bee Utey, as that's my plan. The York seems like the best for an air pump. I'm also planning on putting the main alternator next to it, and a second alternator for the second battery where the alt is now, on the far LH side of the engine. Which is strange, since it's so far over from the main battery.

It is odd, though you can see how it evolved, that the aircon is on one side, away from the evaporator, and the alternator is on the other side, away from the battery. Not to mention the power steering.

Yes, the York is in the parts book so that's factory.

    Felix, what bracket is that?

Look at the top bolt on the a/c compressor bracket, then move your eyes up. You'll see a curved bracket which acts as a mount for the p/s pump adjuster and you will also see it bolts to the water pump. One would think you could just undo that one nut and it would simply move out of the way... na it doesn't.

Okay, I see. I've got that on my engine anyway. In fact, the top of the bracket hadn't been reattached when someone did the waterpump before me! I found that it swings out of the way, but you have to undo the rest of the power steering adjustment stuff as well.

Ah ok, mine is welded to the lower bracket, must've been done when the p76 conversion was done for whatever reason....

Is the welding a bit Dodgy Brothers? It may have been someone being a bit too clever.
