Can the 10 spline axles safely handle 33" tyres without lockers of course?

Everyone has seen a RRC with big tyres somewhere - so it is safe to say that bigger tyres alone is not a problem: Its how you use them that can lead to an axle failure. (ie thrash) Just bear that in mind when you go offroad. Murphys law indicates that if you have a spare set (of anything...), generally you won't need them.

Yeah they can. But it is all down to how heavy your right foot is.

Most axles breaking is down to too much power one end and tyres stuck the other, and something has to give in the middle. Uprate the shafts to hi tough and you will break the diff.

But I have played on 10 splines and 33 for years with no real problem.

This is a 10 spline drive member

This is a 24 spline drive member

You'll have to check what one you've got, I've seen 93s with 10 spline, but my 93 has 24 spline. I think they bought in the 24 spline with traction control.

I've driven a few defenders with 10 and 24 spline fronts (obviously), with lockers and 33's;the biggest issue is with shock loading, just use your common sense, and have some mechanical sympathy and you'll be fine.

Thanks for that, My 93 has Traction control + it had air suspension(removed it though) so I may have the 24 spline then?

If you're concerned carry some spare axles with you and a rod with a magnet on the end to retrieve the broken off bit of axle. You might have 24 spline outer with 10 spline inner. Easiest way to find out is to remove one of the rear axles. I've broken the side gears in the diff centre rather than the axles themselves. I probably have spare axles if you need some.

Is it a quick job to pull them out? I haven't even looked at that part of the rave manual yet LOL. Just about done everything else. I remember when I was under the car during the engine transplant I looked over at that evil BW transfercase and thought " I hope I never have to pull that bastard of a thing out"........6months later LOL. Didn't know the BW was evil until I stripped the outputshaft. So now my attention is on the axels as perhaps another weak point on these machines. Although the ABS pump is sounding a little noisy....Hope that baby never dies

    Cheers
