    Thinking Chev

    Hey guys,
Does anyone have any info about installing a 283 Chev into a '88 Rangie?

There are plenty that have done a Chev conversion - but why the 283? If you are putting a small block in I would go for some more cubes. Prepare to have your wallet raped doing this though, there is more than an engine to do if you go down this path. That is the main reason I am only upgrading to a 3.9EFI... I just don't have a bottomless wallet to pull this sort of conversion off.

If you have the will and the money, I would go for it - huge increase in power, and properly done, a very nice conversion.

Thanks for the response. Only reason I'm looking at the 283 is that I've basically been given one and thought that a 4.6 might be easier to get mod plated than a 5.8

Aside from that you're right the rover would be ridiculously easier, I just always like to have something a bit different. For example my first rover was a series III ex army which I put a 2.6l Nissan 6 into. Bit of fiddling but had enough torque to play with and was free revving enough to not need an overdrive. Amazing fuel figures too!

Anyway, it's all just creative ways to get rid of money, some more than others.

Ah - that's a good starting point being given the engine - nice. Engineering wise, I wouldn't think a 5.8 would be any harder than a 4.6 to get passed. Anyway, if you know what your up against, then go for it I say.

There are adaptors available for the engine, as well as engine mounts, so physically getting it in there isn't a huge issue, but the cost will come in upgrading the drivetrain and the brakes.

If you start out on this, be sure to start a thread about it so we can all see how it goes. - Oh, and plenty of photos as well.

    All the best - Gav

A 283 Chev is 4.6 litres ,not 5.8 ,thats a a 350 ,they barely made 190HP and really arent much good unless you restoing a 60's Chev. Rather use a 308/355 stroker Holden engine or a 302 Windsor
