I was merely using the air ride image as an example, not necessarily recommending them as the supplier, AFAIK many of the components can be sourced cheaper direct from the US.

The coil suspension conversions of the RRC and P38 I've seen retained the OEM shock absorbers and mounts.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

I think you can do better for most of the air suspension components from an industrial pneumatic supplier like SMC or FESTO. It all depends what sort of setup you are after.

The coil conversions seem to be one of two types. The first where they fit springs to solve the customers suspension problems and leave all the other EAS parts in place. The second where they pillage the vehicle of all EAS parts which are then onsold at a huge profit.

Like me I have the chassis shock brackets from a P38 to install on my Defender 6X6, but will have to acquire some after market axle ones or weld on the brackets to the front axle housing.

I keep considering air suspension for my classic and these are the difficult parts to source. I wouldn't be reinstating a factory system, nor an overpriced bling aftermarket system as shown in this thread. I'd be going for factory look but much simplified control with manual over-ride.

I'm told P38 bags and mounts can be used.
Linnrover have some for sale on ebay (shock towers)

When I bought my Event Horizon, the rear airbags were taken out to the tow-bar via Schraeders, and a couple of manual on/off valves that allowed the standard air tank to be filled at a servo, then re-routed to adjust the rear air-bags if required.
Front was just a couple of Schraeders.

The valve body and pump etc were merely left in place with redundant hoses blocked off.

Alas, the Temptation to Tinker was too great.....

The compressor is, was, and from what I read here...always will be a weakness. - The duty-cycle is too short for any system that is less than 100% perfectly air-tight. Or in other words, is adequate to do the job when everything is better than new....

Ideally, a bigger/better compressor AND a larger capacity air-tank, along with height sensors that lasted 'forever' would make the system useable.

But a bigger compressor could be noisier...

Mounting it all on the chassis rail keeps it cool... (read 'drowned'...) but having it in the Engine Room can lead to overheating problems, so I'm told.

Are the height sensors still in place ???

I haven't yet checked to see if the sensors are still in place. I have been driving the disco for the past week so the Rangie is parked at the bottom of the drive way in the rain so I didn't feel like getting all wet

I have just drawn up a template for a lower mounting bracket to suit a D2 air spring and will cut a couple out on the plasma cutter at work today for a laugh and see how they look.
    Will post some photos tonight.

This is the compressor I have put in the disco
VIAIR Corporation - 380C Part No. 38033 (Can't seem to attach pictures at work)
It works really very well and is nice and quiet.

I was in a similar position when I bought my 94 soft-dash, the previous owner had had the EAS replaced with a set of coils that felt like they came out of a unimog. Fortunately everything else was still there and I bought a set of air springs, rebuilt the compressor and valve block, downloaded EASUnlock and returned the vehicle to gadget-car status.
Original parts can be had for reasonable cost with a bit of luck. I would only go down this path if you are keen to have the vehicle as original for purist reasons; otherwise a set of coils and helper airbags will give you an easier life.

I had a look under the Rangie just now and the sensors are all gone so I am guessing as someone suggested that they were probably harvested at the time of conversion and on sold! That makes the decision easy, I won't be going back to standard but I would have liked the 'Gadget' car....

I cut out and bent up the D2 bottom spring mount and it looks pretty good, I did forget to take pics of it though so that will have to wait till next week.

On another tack, do the soft dash classics drive anything like a D2? I have never driven one or a P38 so can't compare but I do have the TD5 D2. I only ask because my wife likes the D2's drive better than the classic and I wondered if an upgrade to a soft dash would combine the two cars good points into one.
    Opinions?
