89 vogue with 10 spline axles want diff lock options

Changing the shock location isn't a big deal by the looks and sounds of it - There is a thread here somewhere about this. Basically just 3 new holes with crush tubes. I will be doing this on mine, as I have front and rear D1 housings I will be using, so I don't have to stuff about changine eveything into the existing housings. I will be waiting until I have the lockers to go in them before I install them - could be a while I think...:D

What i did to my '82 was get a maxi drive off a D1 housing and all, swap the internals, hubs and stubs and re use my housing. That way I didn't need to change my shock mounts (though this is a good idea as the pre 86 ones had a poxy shock setup). So you could use an arb locker and convert your rear housing to use D1 24 spline parts, and with the front.. I don't really know.

Now if I use the 91 rear axle with ARB locker and maxi drive axles, ( regardless of spline count) will this be a tough unit?
I don't drive like an idiot but would it handle, say a 5lt power plant?

If I went the disco1 internals route, would that be much tougher??
Or... Should I just stick with my 74 axles and go for ARB locker and maxi drive axles???

Are disco 2 axles any good? They look completely different, I wonder if they'll be hard to swap on to mine? Would it be worth it?;)

That setup would easily handle what you want and more. The diff housing doesn't matter - just what you put in it.:)

The Maxi Drive axles would be a lot stronger.

I think D2 diffs are like P38 diffs.. correct me if i'm wrong though.


MD/Hi tough axles and an ARB/TJM/Ashcroft/Maxidrive (MR automotive are doing them soonish...) locker will do what you want.

You just need to think about the front axle- currently where I'm a bit stumped!

If you have the $$$ then I don't think this is an issue. There are aftermarket axles & CV's available. I'm going with standard D1 fare as with what I have planned, these should live longer than the gear I'm running now.

Thats the issue, $$$. I'm running 35s, was thinking of using the 2522 cvs and hte axles for the time being until one day i can afford ashcroft cvs.

If starting from scratch DON'T spend money on a rover rear, get a salisbury, you will break the rear with 35" boggers

Its a little dearer, but a far better result

Keeping the front CV's and axles as a "fuse" is a pain also, I reckon I'd blow 3 or 4 CV's to every stub shaft, which necessitated stripping the swivel hub anyhow, fit ashcrofts and never worry again, also, peg the rover crown wheel

Better yet, just fit Nissan front and cruiser rear:angel:
