89 vogue with 10 spline axles want diff lock options

I've been told that with my 89 classic Rangy if I want to run diff locks i need to change to 24 fine spline axles. Can anyone shed some light on what I need to do? I want to put 4.12 diff gears in as I'm running 35inch boggers. I would like to fit switchable lockers not sure yet what type either air or electric with after market axles. I was hoping to retain the classic front set up to use the stub axle as the "fuse" in the system as they are very easy to change. Please let me know of options that you guys have done to your Rangys. Some suggestions I've been told is to use disco parts like the hubs and diff carrier. Is this correct? Anything else? Cheers all help is appreciated

    Wow, interesting.
I was going to do the same thing to my 1992 Vogue.
Question... How did you fit the 35 inch bloggers in there?
    Much lifting, trimming, etc?

It has 2" suspension and body lift with LRA flares plenty of space for the Boggers

You will need 24 spline axles and CV's. Disco stuff is a good place to start as they have the 24 spline gear in them. If you can get a complete front and rear diff from a Disco 1, then you will need to replace the diff centres with the lockers, and you would put the 4.11 crown wheel and pinion in at the same time.

There are a few choices for lockers - ARB - Aussie made, but cheaper to buy them from the USA than getting them locally (who knows why). Ashcroft make a very high quality unit as well, which can be landed on your doorstep for $860 each (this is what I'm going to buy when I have saved up enough) - I think they also do the 4.11 C&P sets as well, but not sure on the price. There are also some cheap Chinese knock offs of early ARB lockers that a few on the forum here have got and seem not to have any issues with. There are also some electric lockers available, but the ones I looked at needed a ring welding to the diff housing to fit, not sure if there are others that don't.

I will soon have a set of D1 diffs, that I will put to one side until I can afford exactly what you want to do.

    Cheers - Gav

As mentioned they fit fine but flares would be required, so the front and rear guards would need a good trim - something I have yet to be able to bring myself to do... A classic Rangie with 35's on looks awesome - one of the toughest looking rigs around. With any luck, mine will wear a set eventually.

Thanx for the reply mate. I have decided to go ashcroft lockers and i think 4.37 gearing also ashcroft all ordered today (ouch) $3700 from LRA so I don't have to wait too long as it's going to be a weekend weapon. The low gearing won't worry me much. I will be changing the viscous transfer for a centre diff lock case with defender gears aswell. Going to retain my cvs and stub axles(fuse) because of ease of change. I don't want to break anything too far in so will need a healthy supply of stub axles

What axles are you going to run with them and cvs?

I'm about to put in a 24 spline jack mac hypoid front diff and aren't too sure what route to go with front axles/cvs. As a front locker is useless without decent CVs.

I have a pair of rangerover vogue axles front and rear 1991 3.9 auto. My rig is a 1974 classic. Am I right in thinking these axles have the stronger 23 spline diffs ? Because I intend fitting ARB air lockers in them and fitting them to my 74 .
as you can imagine there not cheep and I need some help confirming there the best ones to use. Any help would be great and thanks in advance

Could be wrong, but I thought the 91 Rangie still had 10 splines in them. The D1's had 24 spline axles - the 23 splines you are talking about I think are the CV's, not the axle ends that go into the diff. If you are unsure, it doesn't take long to pull a rear axle and check.

Pretty sure they had 10 spline axles. Regardless, if you're doing a locker you're going to need to upgrade the axles anyway. Also if you use a D1 or post 86 RRC rear axle you need to move your rear shock mounts as they are different.

And the front diff uses different radius arms so you have to change the bush on the chassis too (i think thats all that is different- could be wrong though).

What i did to my '82 was get a maxi drive off a D1 housing and all, swap the internals, hubs and stubs and re use my housing. That way I didn't need to change my shock mounts (though this is a good idea as the pre 86 ones had a poxy shock setup). So you could use an arb locker and convert your rear housing to use D1 24 spline parts, and with the front.. I don't really know.
