    non efi petrol tank, is the pump inside it? chev

    hay all,
    Well project chev is in progress, will set up a thread shortly, but the question is converting a 86 efi range into a non efi. The idea was to get a non efi petrol tank.

    So the question is;

    Is the fuel pump inside the tank?

    Cheers NAT P

    The fuel pump in the non EFI version is external to the tank - on the LHS chassis rail just in front of the back axle.

    I have just converted mine to EFI and put an EFI tank in it - one of the things I wasn't expecting is that the EFI tank is slightly shorter than the non EFI version, so it didn't bolt straight in - I had to make some brakets up to sort it out. Based on that, I'm not sure what will happen if you try and put a non EFI tank in where an EFI tank once was...

    EDIT - if you want a non EFI tank I have one here you can have, but I will be keeping the old external fuel pump for another project.
    If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.

    You dont need a non efi tank. Just modify the pump with some tube so it by passes the actual pump. If that makes sense. I braised a bit of copper tube on from memory and it ran fine for 10 years before I sold it. I removed all the efi gear from an 89 model and fitted an edelbrock manifold and quadrajet carby.

    Use the EFI setup for your non-EFI engine...easy. The EFI pump is designed to flow enough fuel at higher pressure for a V8. At lower pressure the same pump will supply much more than enough fuel at the lower pressure your carbed engine will require. I take it you'l be using a reg before your carb?...a good idea even if you weren't going to.

    If you do this make sure you use a good quality fuel regualtor. I blew 2 of the cheap ones. Also, when the efi pump packs up it is a pain to replace however if you use an external low pressure pump there is a large choice which are cheap and easy to replace.
