New ignition barrel & matching keys?

    Hi Guys

I now have a classic rangie which appears to need a replacement ignition barrel due to a prior theft attempt.
What are the odds of being able to get a new barrel matched to the existing door keys?

A decent locksmith will be able to recode the new barrel to your existing keys.
The same goes for a 2nd hand barrel if that's a cheaper option.

    Thanks Scouse

Does anyone have a good place to buy a new ignition barrel for a 93? I plan to keep it for a while, so new is worth it.

Easy enough to match it yourself. Buy a second-hand barrel from a wrecker, insert your key into the barrel and file off any of the little brass tangs that sit proud.

And buildup the ones that don't make it to the outside of the barrell. But how possible is it to strip a barrell from a RRC to rekey it without completely wrecking it?

I'll be starting with a new barrell.

From memory, to get to the clip that secures the barrel, you have to remove the steering/ignition lock assembly by drilling the heads off the security bolts.
Not absolutely necessary to have all the lugs flush with the outside of the barrel. As long as they aren't proud of the barrel when the key is inserted, it will turn. Several times I have rearranged lugs to the nearest ideal arrangement, then filed off the proud bits.

    Hi Dougal,

    Get the whole thing:

Range Rover Classic Steering Lock & Key Set 1990-1994 | eBay

You'll need the switching part sooner or later when your contacts wear.

Got mine from this seller, good to deal with.

Thanks for that. I still haven't seen this vehicle (it arrived shortly after I left for a work trip) so I need to check the model code and which barrell I need. The price is agreeable.
