Wouldn't it cost the same to put an LS1 in? I know what I would rather.
Highway cruise an LS1 would easily average 12l/100
Would flog any of those diesels anyday of the week.
Just my 2 cents.. But then again I'm not a real diesel fan.. I like my L322 diesel but next one will be a supercharged V8 for sure:twisted:

The 4BD1Ti figures are factory figures.
I once read an article (UK) where a guy had bombed his 4BD1TI, all as you suggested; measured output at 170Hp and 400Nm, but was disappointed as it laid a smoke screen almost all the time with the minimum of acceleration, plus it cost a HEAP to do this.
The std TD5 is 135 hp and 310Nm. The above figures power/torque for TD5 are just with a $900 computer remap, no other changes.
If you want to increase intercooler size, muck around with turbo, bigger exhaust, they're (in UK) getting 240hp and 550+ Nm torque! MEASURED, not guessed( Cost a bit, again)
That Td5 is a great engine, and in an Auto LSE would be great, quiet and smooth, everything a RRC should be....
But ...
I had a 4BD1T intercooled engine in my '92 Sherwood, Easily 400+ Nm, 33" tyres and a 4 speed LT95. Will tow 1.5T all day at 100KM'h up hill down hill, and get 12L/100km doing it. Will eat a Td5 for torque below 1500rpm, and with the fuelling I was running and my big front mount IC and 15psi boost I had little smoke at full noise.
I however agree the td5 is a way better engine all round in an AUTOMATIC RRC or disco, but for remote touring and heavy towing etc in a 110 or 130 the Isuzu is the best by far. The engine and drivetrain is in a county now, I am at 600,000km , replaced only 1 water pump and finally found a clutch to cope with all those Nm's.....

Seriously, unless it falls of the back of a truck (softly), and the Classic is an LSE orin otherwise perfect condition... IMHO it simply is'nt worth of the time/effort/money.
Just buy a nice D2 with a factory-fitted Td5...
It is if you want leg room.:)
Got to admit my ignorance here... only drove a D2 a few times, was too concerned about the chest-hairs getting caught in the steering wheel to notice the leg-room. Or lack of.
Maybe that's why it went so fast. :eek:
On the other hand, my Classic has too much leg-room fore/aft. Need to twist in the seat to get WOT. Or move seat and risk said chest hairs...
Disappointed with Classic & D2's minimal steering wheel adjustment. - Even my '87 Toyota Crown had more.

What Diesel engine did the classic come with originally?
My missus loves my classic but can't drive it legally as she's still on P plates.... Have looked around for a diesel classic but seems not that many came here :(
Could always convert one to diesel and not have to have it engineered (so still p plate legal) as long as its an engine option that the car could of been built with.
(Not an immediate plan but good to know so can ponder on it some more)
None were sold in Oz with a diesel, except back late '80's with a VM.
In Uk, Europe, 1991 0n, you could buy a classic with 200TDi and later with 300Tdi.
Comparing a LSE witha D2?
I agree that the classic is wanting for headroom, especially with a sunroof and my stick-up hair (nudging 60 and still a full head!- must be all the fruit and veges?).
Legroom- plenty more in the Classic.
I've done quite a few power upgrades in D2's so test driven a few, and I still prefer the ride and handling of the LSE.
Should get a few bites here?
THe power upgrades? Even though the auto D2's are around 500kg lighter than my LSE with all the extras/weight!, they don't seem to go any better. Maybe I fluked a good engine from the wreckers, when I did the transplant!
I've wrecked a few discos, too, and they just aren't as strongly built as the RRC's, more particularly the soft dashed RR's. Spose there IS a reason why one pays more for a RR vs a Disco?
My TD5, and ,yep, auto, albeit now a (ex Jag) 4hp24, has the smoothest of gearchanges, almost undetectable. Of the 150,000km+ that I've done with it, I'd estimate 1/3 that towing 2 1/2-3tonnes, ( car alone is 2 1/2T) and used to haul uphill and down dale at 100KM(occasionally+++) and those days used to average 13.5-14l/100km
These days with a 2 wheel trailer and load, av 1 1/2t, it uses around 11-11.5l/100km.
Around town? averages around 14-15L/100km, as I just have to show these dicks in their turboed 3.0L 1600kg Jap 4WD's what my rear tyre carrier looks like!
