Don't know what type of car you have but my defender did the same thing and it was the door catch mechanism.
G'day - driver's door can't be opened from outside - no problem from inside - any thoughts please ?

Yep, thanks for that - I should've been more explicit - it's a 1990 and door has always been difficult - I'm sure it IS the internal mechanism but I doubt fixing it is easy - thanks anyway....lennardj
Got a RAVE disc/manual ?
- What exactly is happening, - or not happening...
I understand that the most common problem is adjustment of the exterior handle's pull-rod.
Did mine when I first got it... door would unlatch at the end of the handle's travel, - just... Cracking and breaking the handles is a give-a-way that the adjustment was long overdue...
Yes, I know it seems odd, and RR is one of the few cars in the world where this needs to be done. - Never had to 'adjust' a door in any of my previous cars, from Aussies to Japs to German.
I've managed to overcome this a few times with liberal sprays of CRC into the handle and aimed at the lock mechanism via the little slots behind the handle, seems to happen as dust builds up, this should help get you out of trouble but the rods need adjusting.
Is the handle stiff or resistant to being operated ?
Is it lighter when the internal lock-snib is down ? - Locked from inside.
At what point of the handle travel does (or did) the door open ?- Middle, near end, end... or beyond end of travel ?
The adjustment proceedure is clearly shown in RAVE, - even I can do it.
Thanks for the comments - handle has always been a tad difficult; opened only at the end of pulling and then with a degree of difficulty - was already "cracked" when I got the vehicle - Sorry, what's a RAVE (have a Hayes book but adjustment looks difficuly - particularly as I don't have a garage & have to carry out any work in a parking lot BUT so be it....thanks again.
