Talking NO IGNITION - RR CLASSIC

The (apparently well informed) RACV bloke tells me my ignition key (lock?) is apparently not working...I've suffered apparent battery failure over a number weeks(unable to start engine); now have new bettery; fired up a couple of times but now again -zilch. How can I check this without buying a new ignition lock/key/etc please; also high/low beam indicator lights don;t work but lights are fine? All/any assistance appreciated.....lennardj

What year classic rangie? My fathers '92 classic had a similar problem and it turned out the plug under the dash had fried itself, depending on the year its either a white or black plug. Take the under dash off ie under the steering column and check the wires from the ignition lock/key down to where they plug into the main wiring harness - it was the under side of this plug - one of the brown wires, we just bypassed it untill we can replace the complete plug. Apparently quite a common problem.

when we had a very early one i had a similar prob, turned out to be a bullet connector in the main feed situated/running behind the back of the block
had a nasty habit of disconnecting at night when turning corners !!!

If you want to check the barrel

Take off the surround around the indicator switches and then you can see the back of the barrell (where the wires go too) you will see a small grub screw on the side of the barrell if you remove this then the end of the barrell will slide out and you can start it with a flat head screw driver

    Hi,

As someone else has posted..........we have no idea what year RRC you have.

I have a 74 and went through the bullet plug deal (yes one was sad, brown wire, power 24/7), but in the end the barrel switch needed to be replaced.

They all will at some stage, so bite the bullet. They're not expensive:

Make sure you get the right year, mine was a different part no. but came from the same supplier (in Oz), good to deal with.

    cheers, DL

My 86 RR classic had the same issue, the barrel was worn. The ignition turned on but wouldn't start. Unfortunatly this happened 200k's out of Karratha.

Screwdriver in the igniton and a push start got me there then rewired the ignition to a spare fog light switch for a push button start.

Worked a charm and no one was going to steal the car in a hurry Left it that way till she was retired.
