    Transfer Case problem?

    G'day fellas.

My 12/87 (8MY88) Rangie High-line with the 4-speed auto 3.5l V8 has a problem with changing the ratios in the transfer.

I come to a dead stop, chuck it in neutral and push the CDL stick all the way forward--Only to hear nothing, and the rangie still drives as if it's in high-range. Now it has gone into low-range for me before, sometimes it's very easy, but most of the time it's a major pain in the ass to get it into Low Range.

But my problem is now, when I push the stick forward, it feels as if the CDL stick itself is being bent, instead of selecting neutral or low-range.

Does this mean I need to service my transfer, replace it, put a new CDL stick on it(??) or..?

Note that I've never done any work on transfer cases before.

I've had this RR for almost a year now, and only recently has it not been able to go into Low range, though usually it is rather stiff. Any info that can help?

It also seems to kill off batteries relatively quickly, has a brand new alternator in it, and nothing seems to be running when the vehicle is off.

    Cheers,
    Nick.

That might be part of your problem. It's better to be rolling slightly to get the gears to mesh properly.

If your at a standstill & the gears don't line up correctly, it can be near impossible to get low range engaged. It's not like a normal constant mesh gearbox.

I've tried both--Neither seem to work anymore.

Usually driving around a little bit then stopping used to make it work, but now nothing. Rather annoying considering I live on a rural property with a few acres and my car is the resident 4wd!

The hi/low detent grub screw could be wound in too far. I have just put mine back together and the first time I put the grub screw in I tightened it too much and couldn't select neutral or low range. Took it out, put some locktite on it and fitted it so it worked properly. The detent grub screw is located behind the hand brake bracket and may be a bit of a pain to get to. Failing that, the hi/low selector fork could have come loose on the shaft. You need to take the raised cover with 6 bolts on it that the hi/low linkage runs too and have a look under there. Not sure if you will will be able to do this with the TC in the vehicle though...

    Good luck - Gav.
