easy first two mods I'd do:
quick release sway bar pins (<$100)
2nd battery
Hello All,
I have a 92 RRC with a recently installed fully recon 3.9. All running perfectly. I want to set it up as a really reliable tourer to tow a camper and trying to figure out the best improvements to start with. Strengthening axles, rear diff lock, suspension lift for clearance around new 235/85/R16's, snorkel....So many options. I'm not planng (yet) to go and do the Tele Track, but I want to set it up as best I can without wasting time or money. Anyway if anyone has any ideas as to the best value for money improvements or modification you've done or seen on a RRC, I would love to hear them. Thanks for your help.

2nd battery
Triple battery syystem (so you can charge trailer as well)
Winch
2"lift with poly's in the rear
On board air
Rear diff lock
After that all the normal things brakes, engine, box, fridge, spares etc etc etc
If it was me I would not worry about the diff lock and get a set of good quality all terrans like these

Have a good look at your transfer case... Replace the output shaft if its a BW (which I think it is...) ... Personally, I'd look at changing it for an LT 230.
235/85 - R16's will give you more height, but will the taller overall gearing affect your towing ability ? Dependiing on the towed mass. - Thoughts anyone ?
Buy tyres that suit 85% of the type of driving you know you'll be doing over the next two years... (not 'planning' or 'wishing')
Get an Engine Monitor yesterday... - It reads the temperature of your block/head/whatever its bolted to.
Something on these lines:-

or this from the US

Prices can be improved on, I think, if you hunt around.

Start with the simple things - like two batteries, two spare wheels, decent rear springs and air bags if need be, and of course you can easily bolt in the diff and shafts you want for the rear axle. I'd also replace or at least check the CV joints, as they're not something you want to have die up there.
I think that the biggest thing for me while travelling is having all the tools and spares and water set up so that I can actually find things, easily and quickly. That's about as important as any vehicle mods in the first place.

Thanks everyone so far for your experience and advice. While already on the list are dual batteries, a 2" lift with airbags, and potentially a rear diff lock, I had not though of transfer case output shafts, or engine monitors. So thanks again and keep the suggestions coming. Cheers.![]()
1. 4BD1T/Isuzu MSA/LT230.
2. 46mm front brake calipers.
3. Sound and heat insulation.
4. Decent tyres.
5. Decent tow hooks front and rear.
Yes, I was just reading here about Defender 110 calipers for both axles being a great improvement for the brakes. It sounds like they simply go in but I haven't looked at the inevitable details yet.
Also, as Dougal mentions heat and soundproofing, I'm rebuilding my Rangie and have a pile of DBKill and Dynamat waiting to be put in. That is something these old cars certainly need.

Some have already been mentioned, but my five were/are -
Decent tyres - mud terrains for me, but maybe all terrains for a tourer.
Mild spring lift - 2"
Soundproofing
Rear diff lock and decent axles
Winch
Have most of his done, or the parts ready to go, but I'm just finishing up a 3.9 EFI conversion first...
