My new 93 has had the central locking and rear high stop light robbed from the top tailgate.
Does anyone have pictures of the genuine items?
I can still buy the actuator, the lever is broken (can probably make one), the brackets, springs, links and light are no longer available but I can likely fabricate/find parts to a similar end if I can get some pics. Does anyone have pictures so I can match up something close and make a cover that looks similar?
"...My new 93 has had the central locking and rear high stop light robbed from the top tailgate..."
- You mean the STOP light that sits at the bottom of the top glass, next to the lock etc.... As luck would have it, the screws on mine have rusted away, and said cover has fallen off, and the rest is adrift.
My actuator thumps and moves, but has no effect on the LOCK, have always had to use the key. Rust has possibly invaded the locking mechanism/linkages...
I'd suggest drilling holes in the steel frame to let the water out, though I don't need to drill mine,,,, its done it by itself.
That's exactly it.
The top tailgate on this one is rusty, as they all are, but still serviceable. Long term I'll do something like this: Range Rover Tailgates - The Product
But for now it's been dribbled full of rust-killer. I'll do the silicone bead thing at some stage.
Any pictures appreciated.
On my 85 I put a bead of silicone across the bottom edge where the glass disappears into the frame about 10 years back. IMO this is where the biggest amount of water gets in.
This one was originally very good for rust and it still is. The tailgate hasn't gained any rust since. It was a car from the Middle East (Saudi Arabia) originally and then the driest part of NZ for most of the rest of the time.
Did you need more detail of the frame supporting the solonoid ?
The stop lamp enclosure slides & locks into those two plastic bits glued to the glass surface. Nothing else locates or holds it.
- The lock mechanism seems to be 'sealed' in a rivetted enclosure. - Central locking is via that white plastic travelling sprung arm... If you still have it, make sure it actually locks/UNlocks the tailgate before you start re-building.... Mine does'nt.
If you invented a one-piece tailgate, either top or side-opening....

Reason: inundation of more werds
1. Build something to suit and look right. This won't be happening in a hurry. I've got far more important things to do first, like make the electric seats sit up as well as recline.
2. Find some usable second hand parts and make it work. I'm hitting up parts guys in the US first as they are way more likely to scrap rangies of this age than Au/NZ due to road salt. In the UK they didn't get the high stop light and I think those rangies are scrapped and gone already anyway.
I think for now you've given me heaps of info. I know where it all sits and what the cover looks like.
The white lever on mine is broken off. But if I can't fix that, I'll have to give back my mech eng degree.
I did see a fibreglass one-piece tailgate in a UK magazine years ago. It was top opening and looked bloody awful. Like one of these:
