    NO OIL PRESSURE

    Hi All,

as I was slowing down to pull into the drive .... the oil pressure light came on
I switched off and coasted down the drive, however I pulled the oil pressure sensor wire (on the oil filter housing) and the light went off. Plugged it back on and it's back on. I restarted the motor for a few seconds and it doesn't sound like a motor with no oil pressure.

Are the switches known for being faulty on the old 3.5litre v8's, or do I have problems

    seeya,
    Shane L.

Not on landies, but I've had a few oil pressure switches fail over the years.
Failures due to oil leakage through the switch and/or electrical failure.

fingers crossed it's the switch. I'll have to pull it out and see if I can source one from anywhere. Is there an oil pump drive drive gear or anything like that that's know to stop the oil pump working The oil is at it's maximum calibration and looks so spotlessly clean you would think I changed it 5minutes ago

If you've got a compressor with a regulator and a couple of suitable fittings you should be able to test the switch by hooking it up to the compressor and putting a few PSI into it and testing with a multimeter etc to see if its working OK.

If its not then chances are you don't have an oil pressure problem and just a dodgy switch.
Do you have a gauge that you could fit to see what oil pressure you actually have?

I'd stick a gauge in it and see what you see

I've had a pressure switch fail on an old 2.25 petrol. Had all the syptoms of low oil pressure, rev it and the light would go off etc. But still had good oil pressure

The oil relief valve on these can also stick open
Just take the plunger out and make sure it hasn't worn and cocked thus locking it open.
A bit of fine emery can touch it up

    +1

    Get a gauge 0-100 psi.

Get a short hose to suit gauge with a brass fitting on it to screw into oil pressure journal where your switch was.

Check it with that before anything else....

How many KM on it? On my tired 3.5 the oil light would come up after a long hot run when it dropped back to idle. That definitely was low oil pressure as the gauge read almost 0 as well. That was one of the reasons I stuffed a new engine into mine, but having said that, it had been doing it for a while.... Just had to keep the revs up a bit when it did that.

It's done about 190,000kms. I'll check the pressure switch later tonight when I get outside. Fingers crossed it's that simple

Sounds like there not known for oil pressure issues either way!

Do you have access to a pressure gauge? This is the best way to check the engine. Fingers crossed it is just the sender.

By the way, my 3.5 had over 300 KKM on it, so yours is just a spring chicken by comparison. Should have plenty left in it.
