    Headlight issues

    Hi Guys,

I noticed my wife had no lights on when she was driving home the other night. So I had a look the next day and noticed a wire had snapped off the back of the indicator stalk. When touching this wire to the stalk lights came on. Easy fix I thought lol. Whilst looking around to see if there were any other issues I managed to short out the main light switch/stalk. That went up in flames in 2secs. So I replaced it with a switch from my 89 classic with no luck. I don't have park lights/dash lights. All fuses and relays I can find are ok. Is there any other areas I should be looking for an open circuit? I was hoping the damage would be limited to the lights on/offswitch.

As I was unable to solder the wire back on to the snapped connection I was quoted $175 for a new indicator stalk which I can’t afford. No one in Adelaide seems to have a SH unit.

I also have a 89 parts car so I’ve was looking at upgrading the dash at some stage and though I might be able to splice the later model Colum switches but the wiring is totally different And I only have the 85 wiring diagram.

    Thanks for any assistance.

    headlight issues

    I have an 81 RRC.

About two years ago the main headlight switch stalk gave out with wear and tear.
I took it to my local auto electrician and he has wired the main headlight to the secondary parking /dashboard light switch stalk.

Wasn't expensive approx $70.00c a couple of years ago.

He removed the main headlight stalk and its now so much simpler, first position parking lights second position main headlights all off the one switch.

My Auto electrician also fitted an old style dip switch on the floor, same as used on old Holden as your high beam switch on the stalk may not be working and can cause your headlights also not to work, this issue became apparent when they were wiring in my spotlights.

Check with you local auto electrician and see if they will do the same.

    Cheers

Mine was just doing that. I also noticed the dash lights and parkers worked when only the parkers were on. I figured there had to be a 2nd contact in the light switch where the "headlight on" position was. So I whipped the switch and and cleaned up the contacts in it (there in plain site if you look down the switch). There is one burried down towards the base of the switch that is the parkers/dashlights when you have headlights selected. A quick clean of the contacts fixed mine.

    Thanks for the help guys.

I fixed the wire to the HI/LOW stalk and narrowed the power issue down to a burnt out connector which I replaced and installed the main lighting swich off the parts car. So now we are all good on the lighting front.
