OK .... I'm one eyed when it comes to RRC and for me my 81 3.5 V8 2 Door Auto (Borg Warner 35) is my preferred choice because I've got one
They are simple to work on .....only 3 fuses with wind up windows.
When I open the bonnet I can actually see the plugs with no dark lord (lucas) looking back at me....well maybe his younger brother.
If its running rough it either basic fuel, spark or electrical with no flappers, sensors, computers confusing the issue.
The only major oil leak it has is from the steering box, with slight leaks from one swivel housing and the auto box but reasonable given the age of the vehicle.
Yes ..... its not the quickest but the 3.5 is mated well with the Borg Warner 3 Speed Auto (conversion done by Winterbottom Fauls (original Landrover agents) here in WA.
She sounds great, pulls away in 1st but 2nd and 3rd gear lacks that mid range accelleration and top end speed.
They can be noisy above 100Km, the doors can sag .....(not anymore with new lower hinges) and good ones are getting rare.
I am looking at either rebuilding a 3.5 v8 or go bigger with a (4.6 V8) and keeping the carbies or a Holley (to keep it simple) but not sure at this time.
Will want to investigate JustinC idea re careful cam selection if go for 3.5 rebuild closer to the time.
But all said and done since its purchase (in 2004) I've learned to turn a spanner or two, become patient and have been helped in my landrover experience by excellent people on this site.
And ......she still makes me smile every time I drive her and that is priceless
Cheers
