    p76 4.4 v8 in a 1972 range rover

    I am currently re-building a leyland p76 4.4 v8 engine

the engine has been stripped and I am waiting on some parts for the first part of the re-build which should be here soon, I have had it bored .20 and I am running landrover 8.13:1 pistons which will take it up to 9.5:1 in this engine, maybe more according to rumours. Any ideas?

I have had the crank polished an it was at .10 anyway. new cam bearings have been fitted and its now on the stand waiting for my parts , here is just a few pics of this latest stage of things :

anyway my question, thats is what cam to use?

I do not want to have to adjust the cam timing with a vernier set up etc although I do want to invest in a duplex roller chain and billet gears and would like a recommend on those too.

Re the cam, I am a bit lost! its going in a range rover so obviously torque is needed but the standard 285 ftlbs will be plenty to break the ageing driveline so I dont need more than that so I would like to keep that level low down and then gain some more horses in the mid range and top end. I also do not want to risk hitting valves with my higher comp pistons fitted.

The rangie does about 25% offroad and the rest town and highway mixed driving with an overdrive fitted to an lt95 box.

Real steel in the uk have not had much to do with these engines for 20 years or so but they say they only sell one rv8 cam that does not require mods and that is a fedral mogul (made in mexico? ) early p5 cam. I have a new old stock standard 3.5 landrover 8.13/8.25:1 cam from the 80's I could use (although one snapped in the post which worried me a bit about quality).

if I look on an Aussie motor-factors site they say about fitting another cam if its going in a range rover, here: Land Rover Parts - CAMSHAFT - ROVER 3.5 V8 (CAR(8.25 & 8.13:1) PRE-DETOX (IMPERIAL CAM BOLT)

if I look on the Crow cams site they give this info, and the specs look very different from the last: http://www.crowcams.com.au/media/cat...ge%20Rover.pdf

I did think about getting a new old stock p5 cam if that would be better than a made in mexico one from real steel but I am not sure why real steel think that was the best of the 16 or so rover v8 cams fitted as standard over the years, as it must have been the first UK one and technology was not as advanced then? I would be glad if anyone can answer that as it would be an easy fix!

I cant go above 0.43'' lift with the standard valve springs I gather so the ones from turners are out and all but the standard cam from dynatech are out too.

All help greatly appreciated as I am a bit lost!

ok so after some more digging I am thinking of the second one here:

    CAMTECH CAMS -* Rover. Range Rover* & V8 3.5-4.6 Ltr 1986 - On Camshafts & Components

what do you guys think and are this brand any good?

    Thanks

I just re-read your post properly and see you've crossed out the H180 from Turners. I asked them about it as they are quite conservative engineers and they said they'd had no trouble. So I got it and the little booklet that came in the box said that standard springs should be fine, but to check.

Sooo . . . after the usual Internet reading, I found that it doesn't hurt to change the springs and that you can also cut down the valve guides. Without the later type seals, the standard guides are fine, but with the seals fitted it's a bit close. (This is assuming the P76 has the same sizes.)

I got a cutter, #4725, and arbor, #4732 from Summit Racing, with seals to suit, #506-16. I did the whole job with a drill press and shouldn't have any trouble now.

And I also got some Kent VS44 springs from Rimmer Bros. But in hindsight, since they sell the whole kit, I should have gotten that and saved myself the trouble.

Hi, yeah I crossed it out as it needed the mods I dont want to do as I have re-build heads coming and its a shame to mess with them reall, plus I already have £££££££££££ in this lol.

Also that cam would move the power up the rev band a bit according to real steel- how have you found it and whats it in?

    Any opinions on camtech guys?

It's going to go into a new 3.5, (should I ever get it done), and I expect it won't move the power around too much, as it's the mildest cam Kent does for that motor.

I am surprised you got one from the uk with all your homegrown stuff being as good or generally better!

It might be, but dealing with Australian companies is so painful it's not worth the bother. I went through one major cam supplier's website to find some springs and it was so confusing I gave up. I sent an email to complain about it and they said that, yes, it is confusing and they'd fix it up. Wow, why didn't they think of that before? So I ordered a bunch of things from England, and it's all here now. Most English suppliers I deal with are motoring down the highway while the Aussie company is still pumping up their bicycle tyres.

I have found that with the dynatech people, lots of emails ans a phone call but still nothing through. crow a little better and camtech better than that.

Unless your unique geography saves you maybe your industry goes the same way as ours did and your companies only get it organised when they are selling re-boxed tiawanise and indian stuff like ours
