Could you replace it with a pump up shock absorber and either hook it to an automatic leveller like the airbags have or just level it manually?

Betcha someone's tried it!
At any given point in time, somewhere in the world someone is working on a Land-Rover.
Could you replace it with a pump up shock absorber and either hook it to an automatic leveller like the airbags have or just level it manually?

Probably the best (non-BOGE) solution... gives you both height control and is a damper. Certainly cheap and easy.
For height control, I'd take the KISS approach, manual control of air in/out and use your low-beam headlights as the measuring gauge... By now you should know where their 'line' is on the back of other vehicles when all is level.
Those dinky little artificial horizons look good, but pretty useless when it comes to resolving 1/4 of a degree..![]()
