    Learned something about brakes today

I recently purchased front and rear axle assemblies removed from a 1998 D1 so I could fit them to my 1988 RRC. It was a relatively simple modification until I got to the front brakes. 2 problems I have run into.
The mounting bolts for the callipers are different sizes in diameter, larger on the D1 by lets say very little, but enough to make it hard.
The RRC has 2 brake line circuit to the front callipers and the D1 only has one. I actually new this before I started but made the assumption I'd be able to simply use the RRC callipers on the D1 diff assembly. NOPE WRONG!

So now I have a choice.
    1. Drill out the mounting holes and fit the RRC callipers using the D1 bolts.
    2. Drill out and tap the hole in the D1 calliper for the 2nd brake line that obviously has been filled.

I'm taking them to by brake specialist tomorrow to get his opinion. Has anyone else ever come across this problem? What did you do?

We drilled out the caliper holes to suit the D1 bolt. Another option is to convert the RRC brake system to be single line, some have done this when converting to Defender calipers. For the rear, assuming you got the calipers with the axle assemblies, you should be able to use the Disco calipers as they are both single line.

drill the caliper mounting holes out slightly, and retain the twin line calipers. iirc they changed to vented fronts in 1990 this is a good upgrade and well worth the alterations. you only require a pair of rotors ans calipers from a 1990 on rrc. i have some calipers if you need some.

I would prefer to keep the dual brake lines. So i am leaning towards drilling out the holes. As you mentioned the rear bolts straight up no worries.

Thanks for the offer. I have 2 sets of callipers already, one set from a D1 and another set from a 88 RRC. Unless you have a set with twin lines that will fit a D1 axle assembly

I noticed the D1 axle assembly i has solid rotors, but the RRC one has slotted rotors, i might check to see if they are vented as well. Thanks for the tip.

the calipers i have will suit the thicker vented discs, rrc 1990 onward upgrade. i mentioned them in case you take the opportunity to upgrade to vented discs and retain the twin lines etc....

I ended up using the drill press to drill out the mounting holes to 12.5mm. I started with an 11.5mm bit and moved up from there in 0.5mm increments to ensure the hole was centred nicely. They bolt on perfectly using the D1 bolts.

All i need to do now is bleed them. Hopefully that will be simple enough.

Thanks for you help. I still might upgrade to vented rotors, i just want my car going for the time being.
