Does anyone know what this is for?

This may be a silly question but I don't have an owners handbook for my 1977 two door classic.

What is the stubby little stalk behind the windscreen wiper control on the steering column (ie on the left hand side of the column) with a little graphic on it like a light bulb? The lights are controled from the other side and the interior and panel lights are controlled by little sliding switches just below this mysterious stubby stalk. I can't work out what it does. Can anyone help?

    Thanks

Fog lamps where fitted. I used mine as a master switch for driving lamp relay.
When originally wired up, IIRC they were only operational with low beam?

The stalks changed from side to side, depending on year.

I didn't think the early Rangies had this function.

    I know mine doesn't. ('75)

    Hi ghillie,

On my 81 RRC the switch on R H Side behind wiper control used to turn on the headlights.
The LH switch behind the indicators, one flick down parking lights, one further flick was headlights.

My R H switch behind the wipers started playing up, lights wouldn't turn lights on and my local auto electrician wired everything to the one switch to L H side behind the indicators.

So much easier, one click parking, two clicks headlights ....oh and the dip switch is now on the floor

    Cheers

Thanks to all - it's def on the left hand. I don't think it's a dimmer but I'll check again. Most likely so far seems fog lamp switch - redundant as my car doesn't have them.

    Hi,

The original owner's handbook for mine (74) calls it a driving/fog lamp switch.

    3 positions:

    1. Upright, aux lamps off.

    2. Down one, single fog lamp, LHS only, with headlamps on.

    3. Down two, Both fog and long range driving lights on, with parkers or headlights on.

Mine is just wired to switch driving lights on, only activated when high beam is on, i.e. dip lights and driving lights go to off automatically.

    cheers, DL

Thanks to all - I'm sure its a switch for fog or driving lights.

    I have another question.

Does anyone know how to remove and replace the instrument cowl (shroud) covering the back of the instrument pod?

Do I have to remove the front panel of the instrument pod? Are there screws behind the four black buttons on the front panel and (if so) how do I get them off without breaking them?

Has anyone done this job and have any handy hints?

    Thanks
