Could someone please help me to identify the transfer gear box that is fitted to my 1988 Range Rover?
The gear shift is marked with "diff lock" as shown in the photo.
I had a look at the transfer box under the car but the only label I could see read '1.222 ratio 4x4'. The casing also sports a few Leyland logos here and there.
I had an NEC in '89 that looked like that, it ended up in SWMBO's Patrol after eighteen months until the analogue system was turned off. (I bought a Motorola Micro-TAC, how cool was it to have a flip phone in '91 ! )
The transfer case gear box seams to be stuck in high range. I can move the gear stick to the left and right but it will not move forward to the Neutral or Low range positions.
I used to drive an '88 / '89 model, and found it easiest to have the car rolling slowly in neutral, then change to Hi/Lo. Be positive about shifting the lever..and yes, it will crunch slightly, most times.
If still in doubt, let a LR mechanic/Owner have a look...
x2 on the phone. Never-ever get rid of it or take it out. Historical value will only increa$e.
I had exactly that Motorolla handset in my RRclassic yes it is analogue. You could have it as a permanently mounted 5w set or you could also have a cradle for the flip phone and it would take the ESN from your 1w flip phone so you could have 5w and better coverage out of the big smoke, that was how mine was configured.
It was great I could get mobile coverage in Nowra when the closest telephone transmitter was in Kiama 20 miles away. Much better remote coverage than the CDMA, GSM 2G, 3G or anything since.
You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.
