What happens if cam is worn?

I've only done about 5000 Kms in it. I've got no idea if the timing chain or gears have been replaced. I'm reluctant to pull it apart to replace them because i'm not entirely confident the timing marks are in the correct spot. (pulley could be offset or something ?) In order to change them i assume i need to know exactly where TDC is.

There is a chance the time gear has been replaced because the previous owner did change all the bushes under the car, replaced the radiator and alternator. It looks like the transfer case has been taken out and replaced/recoed as it is far too clean. The roof lining was changed also.

if you love your OHV motor I'd be adding something like ZDDP

I know HPR5 syn is good oil, others might disagree, but I still add a bottle of zddp every second oil change on the Td5 to save wear on the injector lobes

I'm curious how zddp ( an additive that protects flat top lifters ) can save wear on injector lobes. Aren't the injectors in the inlet manifold .... Well away from the combustion chamber or anywhere that flows engine oil. Infact the only thing that touches the injectors is air and diesel from the tank :confused:

a td5 doesnt have traditional pump fed injectors

they have the same style of injector as in a detroit 2 stroke where each injector has its on injection pump directly on top and this is driven directly by a cam lobe, fuel injection is then controlled by an individual spill port in each injector, mechanically controlled for the early injectors (detroit) and electronically controled for the later ones (td5)

That's just plain bizarre ... that diagram speaks 1000 words :) I can see why it would be a really good idea as you would do away with the injection pump. Yeah I could see ZDDP would certainly aid where the cam runs on the injector. Last time I pulled apart a bosch injection pump I broke one of the small parts in it while trying to get the spring loaded top back on. I'm not keen to go anywhere near the modern stuff at all ( if my wifes poogoe 407 turbo diesel ever breaks I think I'll just torch the bloody thing rather than try and fix it ... talk about complex!).

I do run ZDDP in my old cars ..... It's a sacrificial additive from what I can understand, so even putting way to much in certainly won't hurt. I have no idea if it helps or not :confused: But it can't hurt :)
