centre diff locked in too long

I realised tonight that I drove home from my trip out bush last weekend with my centre diff locked in obviously in high range.

I've driven about 50k'ms on sealed roads most of it on the freeway before realising.

There is a weird sound coming from the transmission when I changes from 1st to second. But it does not sound like metal on metal. More like plastic or nylon.
I'm not sure if the 2 things are related. But does anyone think I might have damaged the centre diff or have any idea what might be making the sound?

    Hi,

Can't help with your transmission noise, but I can let you know that I inadvertently drove over 1000k's with the CD locked on bitumen, only probs were slight vibration @ 100kph and weird tyre wear. No lasting damage.

    cheers, DL

Cheers for that. Gives me a bit more confidence.

I have done this too, but only for a few KM. Did it unlock easily once you realised and unlocked it? If it came out easily then it hasn't wound the transmission up. If it was hard or wouldn't unlock, try backing up a bit or jack a wheel off the ground to release the tension in the box.

Not sure how far you have to go like this to cause any damage though - hope everything is ok.
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.

Locked up is how all '93+ Classics (with the BW transfer box) end up as... when the VC gets viscious and bites you in the wallet...

Surprising how long the CVs and axles / bearings last like this.

I fixed my centre diff locked indicator light this evening. It is so damn bright I'll never forget to disengage it again. Unless the globe blows or I go blind from looking at it.

Borg Warner viscous started in 1989. My 93 is still good.

Unlucky you. The 88 I wrecked was LT230.
