Start with the fuel filter.
Ive had a search through and thought I will still post the question anyway
So here is the problems;
When starting from cold she over fuels a lot and I have to sit there holding the revs at around 1500 till it stops running rough and then she runs with out a problem, this becomes ALOT worse on frosty mornings
When the car is warm (1/4-1/3 on temp) you can start and it surge when idling and even to the point where you have to left foot brake to keep the revs up again once you have driven it goes away but not always, if you do a lot of stop starting its a real pain, if you give the car a flogging it does seem to make it better???
Also when the tank gets low she doesn't like to idle either
The car use's LOTS of fuel even compared to my other V8s ive had and on average its using 30L/100kmBTW what size are the tanks in these I thought they were 89L but mine only seems to be about 75ish if fuel light is on it only takes about 60 odd litres.
My thoughts are either pump, reg or vac advance any ideas????
Its a 3.5L V8 auto RRC 89 I love the car to bits but if I can't get this sorted I will sell it and drive the corolla

Start with the fuel filter.
You will have a MAF like this one:
Prise the plastic cover off. With the engine running, gently move the contact wiper in each direction, note which way makes it run better. Unhook the spring clip (the one near the pen in the pic) and move the degree wheel in the direction that makes the engine run better. Experiment. You can't make it worse.
Also take the vacuum hose off the fuel pressure regulator and look for leaking fuel. A holed regulator will make it idle very rich. Sometimes its just the hose fallen off the back of the manifold making the fuel pressure rise at low throttle. I've replaced the vacuum hose on a number of rrcs as they were all soft with age and prone to fall off.
The MAF over time the spring does get weak and can break
I will get some vacuum hose and replace them all, I did check the one on the reg but I didn't check the other end of it so ill do that in the morning

Please let me know how it goes. My brother in laws 1988 has nearly the same symptoms.
Put in a new coolant temp sensor and it runs a bit better but still no real improvement to consumption. Runs super rich when cold but once warm not to bad. Fine on a trip but around town terrible consumption two foot driving required when surging.
