    ZF auto died tonight

So tonight driving to have a look at a 1990 RRC best deal ever that I missed out on it because I was indecisive, my ZF auto decided not to drive any more. No forward or reverse. Nothing, just lots over revs, it drove for a little bit slipping so I could get it off the road. But as soon as i turned the car off it failed drive again after that. So my mate had a good time towing me home with is 80 series cruiser.

I'm guessing the auto is buggered, but if the transfer case is likely to have caused this could some please let me know.

I'm probably going to pull the LT77 out of the 86 Rangie I have and do a manual conversion. Just thought i'd share the bad news hoping it will make me feel better.

I take it you've checked the oil level?

Yeah. Wishful thinking lead me to check. Although it was warm at the time the stick said full.

Does anyone know if i can bolt the LT230 TC from my ZF auto onto a R380 manual gear box? The auto is in a 88 RRC.

So checked the fluid level properly today. She is full. I also have acquired reverse. I'll be pulling the ZF out this afternoon.

I'm not keen on putting another auto box in it unless I can get one at a great price that I know will work.

If anyone has any tips, advice or suggestions where I might go to get parts please feel free to let me know. I'm in East Melbourne.

    R380 + LT230 combo fitted

OK so after a few months work I have now successfully fitted an R380 5 speed manual gear box to a LT230 transfer case and installed it into my '88 classic. What a transformation! Granted the auto was buggered but it is a totally new car now, the gear ratios must be heaps better with my 31" tires. (soon to be 35's on offset rims)

It only took a lot of stuffing around and a radiator swap to fit the gearbox oil cooler lines. (Also had to bend the lines to fit classic and modify radiator shroud)

I might make it sound easy but don't fool yourself, it was a metric f*c* Ton of work.
