    E10 versus Unleaded

I have been running Unleaded 91 Octane on my 92 3.9 Classic up until recently when I 'experimented' with a tank full of E10 (cheap on the day!). Performance was very slightly, but noticably more refined i.e. smoother power delivery, and maybe slighty improved take-off. Also less pinging under load. This pinging was previously rare and very slight, just one particular hill on the way home at specific revs so I used to drop down to 3rd when I heard this and up the revs.

This surprised me and I don't like the idea of using ethanol in the Rangie. Filling up at a Shell outlet yesterday I then noticed that E10 was marked as 94 octane. It is unmarked at 7/11-Caltex. I haven't worked out the fuel consumption yet and I am expecting this to be slightly worse than unleaded.

Does anyone have any experience or views on this ?

ethanol provides a higher RON (octane rating) than ULP but significantly less calorific value... i.e. there are less "joules" per litre than gasoline. Thus, while the engine may not "ping" as much under certain conditions, it will develop less power and fuel consumption will be increased. That is for "unsophisticated" engines...

GMH and others have developed engine management systems optimised to take account of the ethanol characteristics so that the differences between ULP and 10% ethanol blends are barely noticeable in day to day driving... but it's only their relatively recent engines which have been developed for this purpose...

For my unsophisticated agricultural low-compression Bosch 4.6, 95 octane on a long run is excellent... I don't use it as a daily driver..

E10 has all my Rangie has ever drunk since it became available. My FIL used it for years and I have been doing the same since I got it. Never had any issues but I have no alternate data to compare it to ULP.

My 02 model toyota echo (please, stop laughing at me) runs significantly better on E10 than other unleaded varieties, not that I'd waste my money on PULP in the echo.
    The difference is quite remarkable.
