I haven't read the whole thread, but it seems to have taken a few tangents.
Anyway, could a Moderator please edit the title from nm (nanometres) to Nm (Newton metres). It keeps bugging the OCD engineer inside of me
Cheers

I have no horse in this race.
A point to consider. Every second of every hour of every day, our lives depend on things that have been designed by people that may not have the practical hands on experience that some of you need for validation.

Really?!! Is this still going??
I really dont understand why this became an "your not a good tuner" thread against td5 inside by Dougal! I really dont!!
WE DO FULLY COSTUMISED REMAPS. In fully costumised remaps you adapt the tune to the driver/use/car you have. You advice, you work, you try and try till the costumer is satisfied! You also say what´s what in terms of engine safety and reliability! Power gains in order of 30% can be achieved with little or no smoke. If you add bigger intercooler and more air, you can go further. If you change the turbo and you can go a bit further more! Then you get to a point when the car will make more smoke. Smoke is bad?! Off course it is, I never said the opossite, you just have to be aware of the limits! But its also bad to go and put bigger tyres in our axles without proper care! Hey, eating a macdonalds burger everyday is bad!! Compromisse is the Key....always!
By being responsible, both the tunner and the car owner should know what the car is intend to do and keep that smoke controled and make everything to minimise it, being very carefull with regarding EGT´s and other parameters. But in the end is always up to the owner of the car to decide! If someone just goes offroad, does 2 to 3000 kms per year and wants to push the car really hard, we can do it! If someones has the car to a daily driver, and wants optimised fuel consumption, we can do it. If someone wants lots of torque for towing, we can do it! If someone does thousands of kms in the desert and wants a good, reliable, powerfull map, we can do it! Having the experience and the knowledge in td5 engines, we know exactly what to do to have the desired results and make thinks happen! And then, we have cars winning 4x4 events in Europe, in Marrocos, cars finishing the Dakar Rally etc etc...
I´m not just a computer guy. I have a family workshop wich is in the market since the 80´s. I grow up asking tools as christmas gifts, in the middle of engines, transmissions, gearboxes and all you can imagine. If you take a look or ask for some of our works, you can see that remaping is only a small part of what we do, wich also includes general engine mechanics, overland and competition 4x4 preparation, suspension tuning, and classic cars restauration (have in hands at the moment a 1957 saab 0.7liter 2 stroke engine to rebuild...man, thats a piece of work)
In terms of td5, I own a very early 10p td5 defender. Is my daily driver and is tuned since day one. 15 years/300.000kms have past and I had no problems whatsoever. Changed the clutch @ arround 180.000kms, the turbo unit @ 220.000kms (Garret says that turbo life expectancy is 80.000kms). I´m sure it is ready for another 300.000kms. I also own an highly tuned and prepared late 15p engine in wich I participate and won a lot of offroad events. It does nothing but hardcore stuff and in it´s 9 years of life, zero problems with the engine! Has I said before, I´m very carefull with mantainance, as I believe all should be! All the changes were made by myself, including some very clever stuffs in the suspension. In both cases, the cars were used to test remaps solutions, to inovate, to try and understand what was the behaviour of the engine and the car by setting some parameters this way or another! You wont manage to get nothing if you throw a lot of theories in to a car ECU. You have to try this and that, and see what is what. Remember engeieers do the maths for the world. But are actually the guys that put the hands to work that make it move
Do you really think that a company, wants to have costumers on the street saying that their tunes cause to blow some engines/turbos/headgaskets?!! Or having a car @ a race with hundreds of people watching and getting a DNF because of engine issues?!!
We, @ td5inside, certainly not!
P.S.1 - Sorry to the author of this post and all for completely going offtopic with this!
P.S.2 - Sorry for the language, its not an easy task to write in a foreign language![]()
You have seen videos of 2 highly tuned cars, with big tyres, that make 4x4 competition. Those cars have smoke comming out of the exhaust yes, but they are safe in terms of EGT for what they do. Go there and try to spin those big 37"inch tyres with a smoke free remap;
In those videos the car was always in Low Range gear!! Please tell me, in all your engineer and td5 knowledge, why is this a very important fact regarding the td5 smoke?!!!! If all the maps are the same, you should know that!
Also, If you make a search for videos of diesel cars in a competition context you will most likely gona find traces of exhaust smoke. An this includes oficial manufactury teams. See the audi Lemans car, or the wtcc Seat, the TF Toyota LandCruiser t2 or t3 KZT ot the D4D FIA bajas car or even the similar VW Race Touareg 5cilinder. If you see this very last car in the Atlas desert in Marroco, or in the South America Andes you will see even more smoke and you must know why!! This reminds me, in your engineer knowledge, did you thought asking me what was the altitude of the terrain the car in the video was??!!
You have also seen a video of my very own car with no smoke. FACT. I can make you dozens and dozens of videos with td5inside tuned cars with no smoke at all.
In fact we can make everything... no smoke, little smoke, some smoke, alot of smokeThis has to do with the costumer´s will....nothing more, nothing less! I´ve refused to make some tunes when I was not confortable with what was being asked for, but that was because it was not possible, or it would kill the engine in a few kms!
We can even have a "no smoke on and off button". Some of the cars have a dual map ecu, at the touch of a button they have a very agressive tune! Putting the button in the OFF position they have a tune just to cruise along everyday!!How cool is that?
But ....here are some videos(and yes, all the car were tuned by td5inside. It´s not just random td5 youtube search. I can point the names of all the car owners

There should be many more videos in this "a lot of smoke" category, but I´m sure you are gona search them and posted them for me here
I can go on for ever and ever posting videos of td5inside cars. Luckly they are hundredsWhat I´m sure is, your not gona find a video of a blown td5inside car
In fact the only claims were the ones that you received....wich in fact was only one, wich in fact ended up as none!
And now a video of a film of all the major td5 tunners in the UK (sadly, we were not there...) You can choose were in your smoke chart can they be included!! (The car wich makes more smoke, was the fastest) The car wich makes no smoke at all is a petrol V8

If we have been there, I think we could make even more smoke and probably (with al the respect to other companies) also the best time![]()

Dougal... This is my exact status:
This is my remapping computer, taking a bath and also enjoying his holidays
This is how my car is (waiting for new suspension from the USA - triple bypass shocks)!
With above 40º, sunny weather, do you really think i´m gona get up, walk away from the pool just because you want some EGT´s readings from my car! Relax man!! I do have all the time in the world for my costumers ! I Just dont remember you being one
After my holidays, I will have a 4x4 national championshiop event, then Rainforest Challenge Malasia qualifier, then Portuguese Ultra4 King of Hammers Race. Along with my costumers these are my top priorities !!
Both of the cars that are entering in this competitions will "smoke"
I will add a sticker to warn those that are more sensibles
You will have the EGT´s readings when I get both the time and willIs that Ok?
Regards,
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.
Jose
Just to take the thread further off course
How many gearboxes and axles do you go through?
In fact what modifications do you do for them to do the competitions?
Duane
Also OT... I have a cunning plan to transplant a Td5 into an old sports car body. Which TD5 variant has the simplest and most transplantable electrics? I recall PSimpson7 saying the commercial 90/110s had the simplest setup?
Jose, wow, what a reply, well done
Que Dougal with some graphs and theory?
