Defender eu3 with bigger intercooler, samco silicone hoses, air filterbox moded, Standart Turbo is blowing @ arround 1,5 bar peak! We have 3 or 4 defenders overhere with this power output, one of them its my very own, and its been running like that around 30.000kms, including some events in the marroco desert with temperatures around 45 to 50c! Car power was measured in maha 4wd dino! All the cars are manual transmission.
Here are some videos of some of the cars with this power output, so that you can see the smoke that comes out of the exausth!

Will have to desagree...Cruising allong in the highway @ 120kmh egts sit @ arround 550/600c wich I think is acceptable. Secret for good power figures is messing around with engine response and other parameters and not only with fueling!
Yeah, I know! Td5 is an amazing engine :)
Regards,
Easy solution... Just tell me what do you want for me to test and Ill be more than glad to do it and even make a video!
Altough i must say, driving 7 hours a day during 5 days in te marroco desert in a competion going up and down sand dunes pushing the car really hard gives me all guarantees :)

Uphill, top gear, 5 minutes or more at full load.
But it's really quite simple. To have safe EGT you need a clean exhaust. A smoking TD5 is a danger to itself.
If you want to get more technical, we can talk about A/F ratios, what is safe, what isn't and how much boost is required to support different torque levels.
Absolutely. It is the test for how safe/unsafe any diesel tune is. All those smokey tunes fail this test, as they should.
Otherwise people just drive to the lag in their EGT gauge and try to kid themselves their tune is safe.
What happens when you plant foot is the temperatures in your cylinders hit their maximum pretty quickly. But it takes a while for the manifold and EGT probe to reach the true measurement of exhaust temperature. This is the lag in the whole system, including the EGT probe and gauge itself.
Many people get a low reading from a short burst and kid themselves that their EGT is safe. When any sustained load will reveal just how bad the tune is.
Hi again,
We could be here discussing forever and I believe the conclusions would be the same. I did not say that excessive smoke would not cause high EGT´s.
What I said is that these cars dont have excessive smoke, in the same way they dont have maximum turbo pressure @ 2+bar. We put a lot of efforts and a lot of time developing these cars an these performance maps, and they are reliable cars. Of course reliability comes from mantainance and all the owners of the cars, including myself, are very conscious, with servicing the cars every 10.000 kms, with top quality oils, filters, coolant, etc. Being very conscious owners, we are also very conscious drivers, and dont go 200 or 300km long in the highway @ full throttle. This would damage any td5, not only tunned ones!
In the videos I posted earlyer cars are doing technical obstacules @ lower rpms and lower speeds. When turbo gets to the optimum boost - from 1.2 to 1.5 bar there is little or no smoke, has you can see in the video of my very own car (@minute 2,4 car is @ arround 110km/h @ full throttle):
BILSTEIN 9100 SUSPENSION TUNNING BY OFFROADPROJECTS & TD5 INSIDE - YouTube
Going uphill @ arround 120 km/h I believe is very close if not top speed of my car. Lifted, with the aerodinamic of a shoebox, with bigger tyres, big winches in the front and a lot of steel acessories, we cannot expect much more than that! (although I must say, being unconscious, I can get it @ 170km/h going down ). A non tunned defender will struggle to get 90 or 100 km/h on longer hills and will easily drop speed to 70 kmh or so!
I did not meant to start a discussion here, I just feel the need to explain that @ td5 inside we just dont give random numbers regarding power outputs.
