    Classic front seat bolt removal...

Thought I'd be diligent today and check/replace the seat & mirror ECU battery. (Under front seat)

Well, the front bolts for the seat are a pair of 5mm Allens, but the rear are like a multi-pointed star. NOT an Allen-head, but a socket nonetheless. Methinks it is either 'security' or simply Perverse Poms at it agian.

What is this type of fastener is called, and most importantly, what size is it? - A 6mm hex key floats in the hole, and an 8mm is just too big, if that's any help.

I'd rather buy a quality tool of the correct size, rather than a whole set, - just to get ONE bit.

    Thanks,

    James in Gosnells

I don't know what they are called but the Defender has a couple of different sized ones. I use a screwdriver one in the dash and I have a socket one for the rear seats. They are available in different sizes at most tool shops.

    Thanks for that.
Just looked them up, and, for once we don't have to worry about 'Metric' or 'Imperial'. TORXis neither...

Here's a link to the size-numbering, both internal and external TORX.

You are lucky they are not security Torx like I found holding the DVD player into the roof on my D2.
They are a Torx with a hole in the middle , and I had to scratch around in my Aldi selection to find one.

Finding a security TORX would annoy me even more...

Anyway, I noticed differant sized TORX on the door-hinges, so took the easy way out and bought a Kingchrome normal length set from Bunnings. - $26, around the same as one Stahwille unit.

Should be good enough to last my lifetime !

My '95 Classic FRONT seat rear bolts are T50 TORX, and the front bolts are 5mm ALLEN.

Bearing in mind that the (rear) door hinges are T40 and have little clearance, a longer (50mm or more on the actual bit-length) TORX is required, then buying extra-length set makes sense. Also easier for the rear (of the Front) seat-bolts too.
