    Fuel filter location?

I'm slowly working my way through a list of defects to get my 1988 range rover a Victorian RWC.

The inspector has said the fuel filter is exposed in the rear wheel arch and therefore at risk of being damaged by a rock thrown from the tyre.

My car has LPG tanks where the original fuel tank was located. I now have a small petrol tank installed behind the rear wing.

I've posted a picture of the fuel filter in its current location.

I'd like some suggestions (sensible please) on how to make the fuel filter roadworthy. Should I cover it in its current location or move it somewhere else. Where is a good spot to mount it?

    Any ideas?

    Paul

The standard position for the filter is attached to the chassis rail behind the RHR wheel just behind the axle line. If that is where your filter is now then that is where it should be and the RWC person should be told that position is where the manufacturer put it. It obviously has not been a problem in hundreds of thousands of other cars.

There's no picture in your post, so try again for confirmation.

There was a thread recently about roadworthies and the idiot inspectors who try stupid things.

OK my 2002 d2 is Vic rego the fuel filter is just behind the right hand rear axel can be seen by looking through the rear wheel arch. Some of these's inspectors wouldn't have a clue at what they are looking at if it was where it should be from new then it's pasted ADRS find another inspector.

That is definitely the factory location. The inspector is clearly an idiot.

Can you go somewhere else for the inspection?

It will be well worth doing a search here and asking questions about where to go, and what to arm yourself with for the inspection. (Information, that is, not weapons, though I can see how that would be tempting.)

There was a great story here about how someone had theirs failed on discs and pads . . . on a Series with drums.

Toypoojero chassis are different (wider) and a filter mounted outside of their chassis would indeed be at risk. Explain to your inspector that LR put the filter there because it's waaay inside of the tyre line, there's enough room for a coil spring, even.
Failing that score a scrap of galvanised tin and tek screw it over the filter somehow. not exactly hard.

    Thanks

    Thanks for the feedback.

I'll have a chat to the inspector and see if he can reconsider.

Failing that I'll cover the filter as suggested.

I'm keen to go back to the same place for the RWC as there were many things they did not ping that might get spotted by an inspector with better eyesight.
