    too many volts

hi there all i have a 1984 3.5 v8 rangie with the twin carbies. and 4 speed manual. and dual batteries. i would like to know what is making the batteris to be at around 18 to 19 volts when the car is running. this wasnt like this last week. it just happened all of a sudden, the volt guage goes over as far as it will go,and i can hear the altenator ringing as it struggles to make the 19 volts, i have read in the manual that volts should be between 14 and 15 volts. could it be a faulty alternator or something else, thanks from peter

Sounds like a stuffed regulator. Usually inside the alternator disguised as the brush-holder.

Then again, LandRover electrical systems are very sensitive to defective earthing.

Your batteries are not long for this world running at 19+ volt.

Since it's a 1984 model, I reckon you're overdue a new alternator anyway. Probably around $550, hopefully less...
I vaguely recall folk on here saying that certain BOSCH (Falcon?) alternators can be made to fit.

On a car this old it never hurts to add a few extra earths, (he wrote, not having gotten around to doing it himself yet).
At any given point in time, somewhere in the world someone is working on a Land-Rover.

    Agree... on any Land rover...
Was chatting to a Pommy-trained mechanic recently, and he said the same thing. Corrosion on each and every earthing point is the leading cause of most LR's electrical woes.

I've run a 25 mm² cable from alternator mount to NEG battery post.

make sure your alternator warning light is functioning correctly, in early setups it provides the power for the excitation and the bulb is the limiter.
if its shorted the alternator will make too many volts.
