RRC with EAS - Tyre Size Options?

I've not seen a post on my question re tyre sizes for RRCs in the couple of years since I found this magnificent site, so for my new EAS 1994/5 LSE, can anyone please advise what are the largest width and height tyres (up to 31 inches AT) that I can fit without rubbing etc? Will be touring and towing, plus sand, gravel and country roads rather than looking for mudholes or rocks. Cheers Gavin

I have 235/85-16's on mine, but I rolled the lip of the rear guards in.

245/75-16 is the largest with no mods as far as I know.

    Cheers

I've 245/75 16 bf goodrich at on my 93 (identical guard wise in every way to the soft dashes)

I get very slight rubbing on the inner plastic liners, but only at full articulation at full lock.

No rubbing on the rear, and is 8mm off the rear outer guard when on the bumpstops.

Trouble is, every tire manafacturers size is different. Toyo seem to be quite large, Yokohama and Perelli are a bit smaller.

Without rubbing, 225/75R16 or 235/70R16 is about it. Taller/wider tyres first rub on the steering arms.

Adjust the steering stops and you can go to 255/65R16, 215/85R16, 245/70R16 without trimming.

Then it's the start of body modifications.

    Thanks dougal, thats interesting
    225/75 = 29.3 diameter
    235/70 = 29

    255/65 = 29.1
    215/85 = 30.4, and
245/70 = 29.5, so 31 inch tyres are out of the question, as are the 245/75 = 30.5 available for an unlifted D2

It all depends what compromises you can put up with and what hacking of body work is acceptable.
For me even the 215/85R16 reduce steering lock significantly but on full compression they still allow room for tyre chains if careful.

The only way to get back steering lock is to run rims with less offset. But this means the tyres foul the guards more. EAS means you are a lot closer to the bump-stops more often than most people running lifts with very stiff coils. The question isn't "do they rub when driving?", the question should be "do they rub with the springs out?"

    Beware the turning circle !

100" is bad enough, but your 108" luxobarge could be... interesting in some servo's and shopping areas .

Have you managed a single-point turn down the end of your street ?:

PS, You've seen mine, with 'average shaped' 235/70 - 16.
-I reckon it would look better with taller tyres.

Yep, even though the bump stops have been adjusted as far as possible, it's still like turning a bus - especially compared to the D2a!!

Looks like I'll have to further consider what the thinner tyres look/feel like if I want some longer towing legs to go with the Bruce Davis plus chip.

Here's a pic from my 93 with EAS in access mode (i.e. level on the bump-stops). This is a 215/85R16 tyre and you can't fit a man sized finger between the tread and guard lip.

Thanks Dougal - looks like for long distance touring 215 85 R16 is the go. At least I don't plan on needing chains in any form.

Now to sort out what my options are for improving traction - will start a new thread.
    Cheers Gavin
