Another T'case/Trans noise thread
1987 Classic, 3.5 EFI V8, Auto
Couple of days ago (the day I finally got it running right and officially pronounced it reliable), I was driving the kids to Maroochydore, bout 20km's away from home. Got there fine. On the way back, about 2km from home, either the T'case or Trans started making a whining noise. I'm thinking T'case because it's independent of engine rpm, doesn't occur when coasting and doesn't seem to be road speed related. Only occurs when under acceleration.
I haven't disconnected the front drive shaft yet as I'm pretty confident it's not the diff.
It's about time I did the annual service anyway, so I'll be replacing the T'case, Trans and diff oils. After draining the t'case I'll have a look inside the sloped access panel and see if anything's gone wrong, not really sure what to look for though besides excessive play in the gears?
Just in case I'm wrong (i usually am according to the wife), is there anything else anyone could suggest? Any oils anyone can recommend?

IME T-case whine tends to be pretty constant, and continues with gearbox in neutral.
Even if confident that the driveline beyond the boxes is in perfect working order, I would still start by dropping one of the propshafts and going for a diff locked drive. Just to be sure. Easy enough to do, and you get to grease/check the UJ's.

Thanks for the info, it was time for a service anyway, so I started with the easy stuff. Went to drain the t'case and barely a dribble came out - not good, but next to no swarf on the plug - topped it up with new oil and I'll see how it goes.
