    Capstan winch

    Hey guys,
I've stumbled across a capstan winch for a Classic in pretty good condition. This is the first one I've seen and would like to know a bit more about them. Obviously a rare thing, does anyone have any idea of how many where made?

    Hi Mick,
didn't have a close look at the time so no pics. Didn't want to seem too excited about it. What brands are there, do you know much about them?

Think they run off crankshaft pulley and are for the older classics.

A dog clutch on the crank nose.

    They have PTO's... Both LT95's and LT230's.

The issues with them are the need to carry a long length of large diameter hemp rope.......older landrovers and jeeps had the rope wound around the front bumper bar( a bit hard to do on classic) and some one must stand in front of the vehicle to pull the rope tight while operating.

The good stuff is they will operate all day and great for pulling out other vehicles or dragging logs to the winch from almost any direction.

A 400 dollar electric winch more useful if just for the odd self recovery.

Not looking at using it myself, I've got an old ramsey waiting to go on the 77. I just like collecting parts for the classics that I may use at a later date.

If you're asking what it is worth. Then this should be in the 'What's it worth' forum, but that is only open to subscribers. This is now treading a fine line - happy for the discussion to continue about the winch itself, but please keep dollars out of it unless it is asked in the right area. I have removed the references to this from previous posts.

    Cheers - Gav.
