    Electrical question

Seems when I take my RRC off road I blow my brake light / indicator fuse. I thought it was the cluster at fault, so I sourced a replacement and it seemed to be good. however, having driven through some substantial puddles last weekend it started again. My questions are: Can water in a 12V electrical lighting circuit cause a 15A fuse to blow? It's probably muddy water BTW! Secondly, any known problems on the RRC (84) in this regards, and finally has anyone found an alternative lighting set-up for the rear lights so that I can ditch the OME ones for maybe LEDs???

    Thanks in anticipation guys!

Yes, muddy water in your electrics can cause a decent short. Having one of the most diabolically wired vehicles ever to grace the planet doesn't help either. After many years I finally got my 85 RRC to play nice as far as the electrics go, but that involved a lot of work.

As mentioned a trailer plug full of water may not help, but it could be hard to trace. Is there water getting inside the tail lights?

I don't know of any direct replacements for the tail lights, but I have seen a couple of very good custom made lights to replace them. You could get some LED globes and either just fit them, or better still, solder them into position and seal the entire light with some sealant.

have you got the light in the glass in the back door?

Ive seen the wiring chaff through and normal driving wont short it.. soon as your off roading and on the brakes.

you can buy drop in LED bulbs on the standard bayonet fittings if you want.

Trailer light connection! That didn't occur to me. I shall attack said component with copious amounts of WD40 as a starting point.

Here is a link to ebay for after market light. Not sure if they are ADR approved though.

I think the parking lights are on the same fuse. My front indicators and parking lights on the 86 RRC fill up with water all the time. Maybe check the front too.

Thanks everyone for the responses. It turned out that the fuse had NOT blown again, and the problem was with a dodgy hazard light switch. I jiggled it (the hazards have never worked) and the indicators returned to normal. Thankful to have a solution!

    Again thanks to you all

I'm glad you figured it out. I've had a similar problem and found that the hazard switch, when I tried it out, did the same thing. I also found that the hazard lights didn't work because the flasher unit for them was missing! And I just got a new switch as well, so it all works. Er, for now.
